my odometer and trip meter doesnt work
VSS gear? But, if your speedo needle is working that would mean the VSS gear is okay?
Hummm... Since it's a 97, it's got the actual rotary (analog) odo/trip, but no actual 'cable' to the gauge like in the old days...
The VSS gear sends an electric signal to the computer which sends it to the cluster via the wire harnesses..
Not knowing which wire goes there, it's hard to say what it could be, but more than likely, it's something with the cluster itself...
Good luck!

It is probably the worm gear, or the gears are just binded up. Mine did the same thing so I pulled out the dash and tore it apart. It becomes a pretty delicate process, my gears were all perfectly fine so i took the small motor out and spun it, and made sure the other gears moved freely. I assembled it all back together and once I put it back in it worked.
The worm gear though is the one attached to the motor powering the odometer, and is made of plastic. It is a common problem in all Ford's with the rolling odometers.
Here's instructions on it from an explorer, but it is basically the same:

There's also a youtube video of a guy taking it apart from his ranger. He shows you how to get to the worm gear, but it is a tad different.

I have a 98 with simular intermittent odometer issues. I can get the odometer rolling again by pushing the reset several times but figured it will soon fail completely. Was thinking of getting an ebay or junkyard speedo but wondered if they are linked to the vin# through the ecm or something.
