I prefer a 2 5/8, with good lighting - but i have no clue as to what brands are junk, or which are good. I've seen prices from $15 to well over a $100.

mounting recommendations would be nice as well.

Autometer is probably/arguable tops! Stewart Warner is an extremely close second, followed by AutoGauge. AutoGauge is made by AutoMeter in the exact same house, it's just their budget brand, so you're still getting a good piece that'll do the job. Many budget gauges out there that'll do the job, but I prefer to pay for the quality I receive with Auto Meter.
