Catalytic converters
Catalytic converters
My Son came to see me last night. It seems he is having problems with my truck. The left Catalytic converter is completely plugged up. Has anyone here replaced them on their truck.
I know the take offs are valuable at the scrap yard, but surely there is a cheaper type to replace them with.
Advice!

Magnaflow #94106 is a universal cat and should work fine. If thats the only cat your going to replace I would just put an OEM back in there. It would look kind of strange with a random maggie converter in there and Im not sure if it would affect driveability. How many miles are on the truck? To be honest those cats dont usually fail for a long long time unless something else is going on i.e. rich a/f mixture or it simply broke internally (unlikely). Original 02 sensors? FYI performancepeddler.com with "clubgp" promo code is VERY reasonable if u go the maggie route. GL
Its got somewhere around 250K on it. The odometer quit at 208 but the speedo still works.
The origional O2s, and never have had any codes related to anything other than egr. The only problems ever with the truck was dpfe,(long stealership story) and a transmission at 60k. Been the best auto I ever bought, and I'll drive it till I die.

Here is the overall angle on it.
How was the blockage deterimined? code 420?
.
Next the manifold nuts and bolts are likely to break trying to get them off.
Getting ox sensors out requires a specific socket, heat from a torch head to help.
.
The FORD OEM cat assembly is quite expensive. An after market assemby will be fine.
.
Replace both OX sensors.
If your going to keep the truck to 'death do us part' , I would consider doing both sides.
.
To have the best chance of saving the manifold bolts from breaking, use a torch and cut the flange 'ears' away so you have room to 'work' the nuts and apply some helper lube to get them off after the pipe is out.
If a torch is used be very careful not to burn wire harrness etc. Look good before you start and control where and direction the cutting is done.
.
On reassembly you need a long long extension to get at the manifold nuts for tighining from under.
I used the discribed pocedure on my truck already.
.
Lastly make sure the replacement cat on the rear has the OX sensor bung at angle lik the original and not straight up or the sensor will hit the floor of the cab. Look at the original angle before it comes off.
Some have been made straight up from a mfger with the first letter in the name being 'W'. Hope they recalled them!
.
By the way, be sure there is no missfire condition that passes raw gas to the cats. It burns in them and melts them at temperatures over 1000 f.
.
Get under, look it over and relate to what I talked about above before the job is started, then get your replacement parts and tools to work with.
Good luck.

The blockage was determined because there is no x or h pipe on it. the left side is plugged, and I'm talking constipated
I'll be taking it to a shop because I'm disabled and can't do it myself.
Does anyone have any idea how much the old one are worth in scrap?

I think they go for about $100 each for scrap if I remember right.
I'll find out soon enough as my stock ones are going to a yard next week

That's what I've read before. I called a local scrapyard [and the dude that answered the phone sounded like he didn't know where he ws or something] said $60 for all of it.
May depend on the area. And definitely depends on the yard. I have had scrappers offer me $100 for the pair of mine when I had someone here to take my frame away. So there must be a profit above that to them. Plus I have heard through someone at work that they got around $200 for a pair of them, but that was last year.
I found some for just over $200 a pair, depending on what brand, plus some new O2's. I haven't had time to work on it yet. I have coated the studs dowwn with WD40 twice and I think the nuts are going to come off without breaking.
I have all the tools I need to fix it except coupleling sleeves. I may do this myself afterall, with a few improvements like a cross over.

Whre r u getting your prices from? And also everything is cheaper in the States too. Canadian Tire which is like Autozone kinda, they wanted over 550 for some no name replacements. $700 and i actually got a deal on them cause my wife works in the automotive industry. And from what i have been seeing online down in the States your looking at $500-$600 for what i got.
