Is my compressor gone?

I have a 1997 F150 4.6 Liter. I think my air conditioner (compressor) is bad, It started to make a rattling noise and then a week later I had no cold air. Does this mean it is bad? How much is a new one (estimated)

Rattling noise is probably from the AC clutch. Check if AC compressor spins.

Check the freon pressure. My 02 AC compressor makes a little noise and has since I bought it 30k miles ago. The noise got a little worse when it needed a can of freon which I added about a year ago. I can hear the noise better inside the truck than I can listening under the hood. So far it continues to work just fine! Knock on wood!

No problem. What goes on I've noticed, a certain seller will get about 2 Crown Vic crate engines per year. He sells everything off of them except for the block and heads for some reason. Long blocks, so you have to keep an eye on ebay.

I've purchased coils, engine harness and injectors from the guy and asked that he get a hold of me when has them. He hasn't yet and probably won't so keep an eye out.

you could just be low on refrigerant, get it checked out professionally so you dont overfill the system

Check the hub! The plate separates and the front end wobbles around and causes the rattling, especially when the clutch isn't engaged. Eventually, the plate will fail to the point it cannot engage the compressor leading to a "no a/c" complaint.

Replace the hub ONLY with the correct Motorcraft replacement part. Around $40-50 from sponsor RockAuto.

Can someone provide a drawing or tell me how to get access to my compressor. Do I crawl on my back and look underneath the truck. I am a newbie but I think I found it on the passenger side on the bottom.

Next time you find him, save him as a "favorite seller" then you can always check their inventory

I'm getting my a/c compressor and system checked out tomorrow. I've had what sounds like a belt squeal coming from it intermittently lately, and had to recharge my a/c twice last summer, so I'm pretty sure it's on it's way out. Will see what the problem is and post here too. I figure with 136K miles and 12 years old, it's probably done for.
