Is taking my muffler off legal?

I got a question for all you guys in texas. I pulled the muffler off my truck today and it mae a huge difference going from stock to no muffler. Is it illegal in texas to pull the muffler off my truck?

It is illegal. According to the State provisions, it also requires the exhaust to exit behind the rear wheels. I'm not sure how some of these early trucks got away with the exhaust exiting just in front of the rear wheels. You can also put a glass pack on it like a Cherry Bomb. They're pretty much just a straight thru muffler. I use them on the big engines in some of the ranch trucks because they sit a lot and the mufflers tend to rot off. The Cherry Bombs are an aluminum case so that solved that problem. It's a little noisy in the 74 F-100 with the modded 410 pulling a trailer but it's music to the ears.

Well I left the muffler and the tail pipe on the hangers, so it still hung underneath the truck and you couldn't tell i pulled it off until I started the truck up, so I didn't know if when the police looked at they wouldn't think I cut it off.

I have no idea where the "after rear tires thing" came from, but as far as I know the truck must retain the muffler and as many catalytic converters as it had from the factory to remain legal. You can switch in any street legal muffler you want or even high flow cats, but running no muffler isn't legal. I think you will be fine unless you go somewhere to get it inspected and they check the system. I have several friends who have run open headers, and had no problems. Buddies with diesels have straight pipes and they just put the stock muffler back in when they get it inspected.

Well I have I rigged up to where it'll take me about 2 minutes to put back for the inspection so that's no problem. But how so the guys with straight piped diesels gt away with having no muffler cuz won't the cops pull you over if they see you don't have one?

No, the police couldn't care less actually. Having a stock exhaust on a tuned diesel wont stop it from smoking everywhere so most cant tell a difference between it being straight piped or not with the exception of how loud it is. Most of the exhaust is all bolt on so they can just remove the piece where the muffler is and slide up a straight piece of pipe and bolt that in its place.

The police aren't going to randomly check underneath your truck to see what you have under there. Most of them are "too busy" running red lights, speeding recklessly with no warning lights, or running radar at places where the speed limit was recently changed. I see many cops sitting in church parking lots, malls, restaurants, or gas stations just idling in their cars and eating though . Their last concern is what kinda exhaust you got going. Just keep it legal for your inspection and you will be fine, in my opinion.

in San Antonio Texas I have never heard of someone getting a ticket for running no mufflers. Straight piped diesels, open headers, you name it.. its been done. There is a kid at my college who has stacks on his 08 2500 cummins with no kinda muffler or anything. Sounds like a jet plane/train when he takes off. If he can drive around without having the 5-0 on him then I think you should be fine.

As far as the limit for exhaust endings.. as far as I know the exhaust has to be atleast a foot past the cab. I have my exhaust dumped immediately after my mufflers. Its about 16" or so past the cab.

I live in a town of 40,000+. I have only seen one guy get hit for an exhaust issue, and that was "Excessive Smoke" from his diesel. Hes constantly in trouble, so the cops got his number, HAHA!

Just behave behind the wheel, dont rev at the cops, and all will be well.

Nobody is going to be able to tell what kind of exhaust you have. Just make sure you have one to put back in for inspections.

Just know it's not legal and be prepared to receive a ticket if stopped. I love a nice sounding truck (I have one ;-) )but if it is ungodly obnoxious, I have no problem scratching out a cite. I'm sure your neighbors aren't interested in knowing every time you arrive and leave the house.

You could always get it inspected at a lower end shop and leave a case of beer in the front seat. Thats my plan if they give me crap about not having 4 cats anymore
