Switching a 4.2 to a 4.6

I have a 2wd 97 F-150 with the 4.2 and a manual transmission. I'm thinking about buying a 4.6l. Are the engines interchangeable or would I have do some modification to the transmission or anything?

trans will bolt to 4.6 or 5.4 (jmc has done it) but the pcm will need to be changed etc so you might just as well swap to the 5.4 even

No it will not, the 4.2 and 4.6 do not use the same bellhousing pattern.

You would have to find a 4.6 with a manual transmission flywheel, bellhousing, and transmission.

4.2 has the small block 5.0 5.8 bellhousing bolt pattern. Anybody know if the 4.2 have a lighter duty rear like the v6 and v8 mustangs do?

It's the same 8.8 rear that the 4.6 uses. The 5.4 uses a 9.75.

I dont like how the 4.6 is matched with the 8.8, I destroyed my axle with my 4.6.
