whats my baby worth?
whats my baby worth?
im thinking of selling the truck and i need some honest opinions on its value.
the truck: 97 f150 XLT, 4.6, auto, 4x4(manual), 8.8 rear, 3.55LS, 262k miles, reg cab short bed.
as it sits now: new brakes all around(new springs in rear), front tries are 90%, rear are about 50%(im a teen, shut up), 265/70R16 tires with aftermarket rims. good bettery, good alternator. almost everything in working order. kenwood headset, JVC speakers, midland cb with dual antennas, and a sirius satellite radio hookup.(comes with truck)
what it needs as it sits now: new ball joints, AC compressor, tranny flush, rear end fluid change, pass side mirror
what it will have when i go to sell it: new ball joints, AC compressor, tranny flush, rear end fluid change, and a little rust repair. pass side mirror
things it needs to be a great, not good, truck. rust repair and paint. theres a little rust spot on the bed behind the wheel, the cab corners are rusty, the bottom of the doors on the inside only, and on the tailgate.
taking all of this info into account, what do you guys think my truck is worth now, and when im at the selling point(after i do the above)?
thanks for readng. id greatly appreciate any responses.

hmm...kbb says its a 4200 truck in my zip code. theres no way its a 2300 truck. i understand the concept of value depreciation, but i bought it for 2900 5 months ago. ive done nothing but put into it. ive only driven it 3k miles since i bought it.
What you've "put into it" means absolutely diddly squat. Sorry, reality. If you had $10k of stuff in it, it would still be a $2,300 truck...trust me...and ask me how I know!
People do not care about that stuff. The odds of finding the one guy roaming around America that values that truck just as much as you do are, well, 1 in 3 billion or what ever the population is right now.

Here on the east coast, if you did all the work you say... you might get 3500-4000. The mileage is a killer for one. With 262K, ppl will worry about the drivetrain. It's not a SuperCAB, manual hub 4wd and the 4.6. I agree with the others, probably more around 2500-possibly 3k$. Keep it and enjoy it. Not a bad lookin' truck from your pics

Where I'm at KBB in excellent condition that truck is listed at $4,580. And like Galaxy said it doesn't matter what after market parts the truck has on it. Your still getting bottom dollar for it. I would just hold on to it and use it as a back up.

i cant just hold on to it. im 16 and just lost my job. i need to get rid of it. it gets terrible gas mileage and needs premium. i can get a pretty nice truck for 3000.
I loaded it up and figuring price in SoCal, and that it's a cherry, the price is $4,100.00 Private Party and realistically it's going to be no better than good which, again in SoCal, shows $3,800.00.
Here, where I am currently, knock off a couple of hundred.

My Lariat Scab fully loaded with every option is only listed at $5,500 here in so cal and it is prestine. A truck like that would go for around $2-2500.. The mileage is crazy, it's only a 4.6L which is less desirable of the powertrains and is a regular cab, not to mention rust? Maybe it's just because I am in CA but that would be a hard truck to move in our market.
i know it wont add value, but i bought the truck for 2900, its valued at at least 3200, so theres no way its only worth 2300.
i think id be happy with 35-4000. and its not manaual locking hubs, its just a manual shifter.

It cannot be considered as any better than "fair" no matter what you do to it, because it has rust. Even if you fix the rust, that still can't bump it up to "good".
I just ran it with your zip, it's worth the same there as here within 50 bucks.
NONE of your aftermarket mods add anything to the BOOK value.
Good
$2,830
Free of any major defects.
Clean title history, the paints, body, and interior have only minor (if any) blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems.
Little or no rust on this vehicle.
Tires match and have substantial tread wear left.
A "good" vehicle will need some reconditioning to be sold at retail.
Most consumer owned vehicles fall into this category.
Fair
$2,305
Some mechanical or cosmetic defects and needs servicing but is still in reasonable running condition.
Clean title history, the paint, body and/or interior need work performed by a professional.
Tires may need to be replaced.
There may be some repairable rust damage.
I'll cut you some slack - 2500 bucks.

In the real world what you have put into it or are going to put into it, doesn't amount to a pee hole in a snow bank.
Would you pay $4200 for a 13 yr old truck with 262,000 miles on it, rusty cab corners and tailgate. I sure as hell wouldn't.
If you wound up getting your $2900 back out of it I think you would have done damn good.
It's still a good looking truck, keep it and run the hell out of. Get all your teenage foolishnes out of your system on this truck. It will make you and let you appreciate your next truck even more and then you will take better care of it in the long run.
