everyone's manual should say to run on 87 octane. even the canadian trucks say use 87 octane, and they dont have 87.

Maybe you should post a vid and someone might be able to help you identify the noise. I remember my dad's '97 4.6 having a pinging sound under load...My '03 doesn't do it. But my dad towed quite a bit more than me because he is an avid fisherman (21 ft. Triton).

oh really? apparently you know my truck better then i do. the ONLY rust is a tiny spot behind the wheel, a cab corner, and the drivers door. all of it is easy to fix.

why cant i? and i have looked it up.

tarajerame knows these trucks, -specially how they rust. If the cab corner is going, - DON'T BUY IT!! Trust me, I know how and where lol. Do you know how much work it is to fix all that correctly , - I said correctly ? I don't think you do, -you couldn't possibly. Fix one like that and you'll never do it again.

Pinging and knocking ? Less than 1000, I'll be nice,- @ about $600, some sucker will take it. Be an honest seller or it will catch up to yuh.

how hard is it to do a cab corner? LMC sells the cab corners, then its just cut, weld, paint. my uncle owns a body shop where i do all my work myself.

If the knock goes away with high octane gas, it's spark knock and something is WRONG. It's NOT normal.

then ill have to put my muffler back on.
This is getting REALLY interesting now - $1500 tops, kid. Drive it till it drops.

Look at his miles, - It's pinging from carbon build up. If the knock isn't PVC ,then the motor hasn't got long at all. That's two bad combination's.

Also, don't purchase from LMC , - They have a 50% markup lol.

then what the hell is wrong? mr. smart guy? spark knock is pre mature ignition. a higher octane gas means it can ignite earlier and burn longer. so unless i somehow alter my timing, its not gonna change. im sure most of your trucks ping, you probably cant hear it. it took me hanging my head out of the door to hear it the first time. some of you probably dont even know what your listening for.

as for my muffler, it was held on with a u bolt. all the hangers and everything are still in tact. its just a matter of putting it on.

it probably is from the miles. thats not a surprise.

and how is $60 for a cab corner a 50% mark up? where else am i suppossed to get preformed cab corners?

A 1997 4.6 IS NOT SUPPOSED TO SPARK KNOCK on 87 octane fuel. You CANNOT alter the timing without a programmer, everything is controlled by all the sensors and the PCM.

Your engine has issues. How the hell can I tell you exactly how to fix them from 1500 miles away? Ain't happening!

Brew's guess is as good as any.

If you still have the stockers, sell your aftermarket rims and tires for some extra cash. Not sure how bad you need to money but just a thought.

look. my truck does what it does. im not lying. feel free to come check it out. ill let you drive it. im not holding anything back. it starts every morning, dosent make any unusual sounds, dosent idle rough. it seems fine to me.

i guess ill keep it, because its obviously not worth anything more then scrap. when it dies, ill swap in a junkyard 5.4. i can get one for $500. thanks for your opinions.

as for my wheels, they're long gone. the lugs came loose and ovaled out the holes in the rims.

I think your honest, -that's a compliment. But you getting too uptight/defensive. There isn't any gain being that way. With forums, if you want to learn something, - try inquiring how, without getting lippy. I never do lol.

You have hope, -or I wouldn't bother.
