Terajerame is right. There are guys on this site that have larger tires and bigger lifts and getting better gas mileage than you because they do the appropriate research and do the work. Attitudes like this wont get you very far here. Tera and others like him are wealths of knowledge when it comes to these trucks, but if you refuse to see the obvious they probably can't help you.

its the 4wd and gearing i guess that kills the mileage. my 03 fx4 5.4 with 37's and 4.56 gears gets about 12.5 less than 100k miles. my 01 2wd 4.6 w/140k miles has 37s also with 4.10 gears and it gets 14.5 in town. used to have a 97 4.6 4wd also that got about 11.5----so it is what it is...

 

i just realized something...in 97 those trucks came from the factory with a small tire size of like 235/70R16's or 245/75R16's which is quite a bit smaller than 33". the gears are most likely 3.55's, if you call the dealer they should be able to tell you how to locate your axle code, tell them the code and they can tell you the gear ratio. if its 3.55's now, i would recommend 3.73's or the next gear lower (if you want to spend the money replacing gears and i would do both sets if you ever plan to use 4wd again)

Axle 19 is 3.55 non limited slip.

Like I said - my son in law has a 98 supercab 4x4 with offroad package - 4.6 and 3.55's - and he averages about 13. With your lift and bigger tires, 11 sounds about right.

 

I have a 97 4X4 with the 4.6 and oversize tires. Bought it that way. No Lift yet. I still get 12 MPG.

 

You can get better mileage if you re-gear. The 4x4 stuff really weighs it down though. Best things you can do to get better mpgs are re-gear and custom tuning.

 

my 1997 has the 4.6. with about 158,000 on original motor and tranny. i broke the EGR line off the exhaust manifold and my mpg's dropped to about 5... I had to replace the line and fitting, but its back to around 10 to 11 where it has always been it has stock lift, "for now." My dad had bought his first new f150 in 1997 as well, it got around 10 when he bought it up until he sold it at about 25,000 miles.
