A/C and Heater Core

Hi, I have a 1997 F150 2wd and my a/c compressor was starting to rattle. I took it to AAA car care and he said that the a/c compressor would need to be changed. Cost 750.00 and would take a day. At the end of the day they called and said that the a/c wouldn't hold a charge and they needed to replace evaporator? Then they called and said that they couldn't get some piece into the heater core and they thought that it might be damaged. They told me that they were going to replace the heater core at their expense. Took my truck there on a Friday and won't have it back until Monday afternoon. Does all this sound right? I am no mechanic, but I sort of like these guys but am worried that they might be learning how to do things on my vehicle.

I just had my A/C compressor and evaporator (accumulator) replaced for about $650. Parts were $290, labor $360. Mine took about three hours, and that was after they found out Carquest gave me the wrong part, so they had to go get the right one.

I would be down there watching what they are doing. I know mechanics don't like it, but for the three hours mine was getting done, I was standing 10 feet away watching them the whole time. I don't trust other people working on my truck, especially guys that look like they should still be in high school

the heater core and the a/c system are two separate units, with the exception of inside the truck for the blower/vent housing. This doesn't sound right to me
