Question New Wheels for 2001 Lightning?

Hello, Folks,

Looking to get new wheels for our 2001 SVT Lightning.

Our current wheels are chromed versions of the stock wheels. Got them from a vendor in Southern California 3 years ago, (you give them your stock wheels plus some money and you get a set of chromed wheels in return). Not happy with the quality of the chrome. All of the wheels are severely pitted, even though we babied them and they never got anywhere near road salt of the coast...but that's another story.

Anyway, we really like the stock Ford Mustang Bullitt wheels, but they aren't available in the correct bolt pattern for the Lightning. Does anyone know of a similar wheel style that is available that would fit? Or even something like the American Torq-Thrust that would fit?

Thanks in advance for the information!

Cheers!

Check into the Boyd Coddington Smoothie II's. They have the look of the bullitt rims, and come in chrome.

And here is what you will like best, a red lightning with them on it.

OK, I'm glad you brought that up....the last time I explored the wheel adapter option (around 20 years ago) I heard plenty of negatives, enough to convince me that it wasn't worth the risk.

Has anything changed since then? Can anyone endorse the use of wheel adapters as a long-term permanent solution?

I would gladly use adapters if (a) they were dependable; (b) they didn't cause any undue wear or stress to other suspension components; and (c) they didn't push the Bullitt wheels so far out as to look out of place.

Thanks again!

Cheers,

That looks really nice.

Do you know if the offset is the same as the stock wheels?

Thanks!

IIRC, they are. I can ask the guy who now owns that truck. And I will post back here what I hear from him.

OK. The wheels on the above Lightning have 6" of back space. I can't remember the BS on stock wheels, but hopefully that will help you to compare.

When I finally got my truck, I was amazed that all the cool looking rims that are available for the mustang have no counterpart in the f150 realm.

I personally wanted something like the 03/04 chrome 5 spoke cobra rims in a blackout 20". Was just looking for the lightest *strong* 5 spoke in a non-complicated pattern.

As far as wheel adapters go, I'm personally leery of them.

I don't think they make BC Smoothie IIs anymore... Looking at their web site they have a few 5 spoke styles though. I've heard the billet is a bitch to keep up, but they sure do look great I saw a guy on LR selling a used set of Smoothie II's for a reasonable price. Don't know if he sold em or not.

Do you have any pictures of your pitted wheels, Flash? Just want to see what they look like now

there have been numerous people to use the adapters without any problems.. as long as your not offroading or slaming curbs i dont see a problem with em

I heard wheel spacer/adapters funk with the wear and alignment of the wheels
