If you end up needing an Alternator, - stick with a Motorcraft if you can. Not sure why, but these Fords don't seem to like anything but. Napa might be okay ? Iduno, but be picky on an alternator or you could be running back and forth to the store swapping out ones that don't work or don't last.
Also, I've worked on a 98 ( 4.2L not a 4six) that pretty much smoked most of the pulley bearings, - the tensioner was locked up. Allot of people change the belt and neglect the tensioners. Both should always be replaced at the same time. I'm guilty of just changing the belt and getting away with it, but you don't always lol. If you purchase a new belt from Rock Auto by chance - or just go to that site for the informational. Look up your belt (gatorback brand) and then click on details or info about the product. Gates suggests doing them both at once, -not just Ford. I've seen why. Just something to keep in mind.
BTW , believe or not, the bearings are bad if their tight. If their tight their either real dirty or in most cases, the baring has been overheated. That stresses others, also can take away some performance.
Your factory or original idler and tensioner pulleys should have a just a tiny bit of wobble, enough to notice, -barley , but you can. Test for wobble with the belt removed.
The alternator pulleys are a different story, = no wobble period, just the idler and tensioner pulleys should have a little wiggle. Some guys just have a better baring pressed in. The originals aren't that great and good quality high speed baring aren't that expensive. Could be all or part of the problem.
As mentioned before, check them all and see whatcha got. You'll most likley see what you have to do once you start checking a few things, when you get time.
Good Luck.
