Thats awesome man! Man-ing up and pulling the trigger! All that cast iron stuff gets surface rust.. its no biggie.
If the gears appear to be in good condition then they probably are. I would clean them up really well and check for stress cracks and what not, and if there arent any you should be fine. Gears usually wear when they arent installed right or something. I don't see them just breaking unless its just a horrible brand which is possible. I would type the part number into google and see what pops up.
