Adjusting aftermarket headlights cheat!
Adjusting aftermarket headlights cheat!
Maybe for some it was the first logical step but when I got my lights, smoked Lightning replicas from ebay, they obviously needed adjusting. I thaught I compared them fit wise to my originals and they looked different so I thaught I'd adjust them after. Then yesterday I thaught, why not try to adjust measuring the old light screws to my new ones. Well I'll be damned if it doesn't work great. Measured the base of the screw to the base of the star adjuster/retainer. Both sides I believe were the same measurements for each screw. Put em in, the new Sylvania SS Ultra's too (had one bulb burn out ). On my way home last night, it was the lighting I expected and distance all around like before. I tried looking for the procedure or rule of thumb to adjust them, can't find a flat surface with a wall around me to save my life, so I cheated and used the factory setting. It works and takes all of 20 minutes. Side to side is good now too and the gaps around the light vs the grille surround are smaller and look way better. Just a quick tip for those interested.
Yea I should do this one too now but I also have one of my bulbs upside down now haha. When they are on low beam one is up and the other is down but on high beam ( how I'm running them now since I'm lazy) they move to even and give me the light I want like you said.
I did the same on my new lights, as well as the lights I installed in my father's Explorer. The Explorer worked great, the ones on my Expd, not so much. I guess it all depends on teh quality of the lights being installed.
When I installed my TYC Lightning replicas, I first marked on a wall where the stock lights hit. I then measured from the face of the stock light to the adjusters and set the adjusters on the new lights at the same distances. After installing the new lights, I lit the wall up again and found they hit at the same spot the stock lights did (no further adjustment needed).
Give me a day or two and I'll pull my old one's out and measure them. The measurements are not real precise, as you kind of have to guess where the face of the light projects out to (hard to describe ... I'll try to take a pic), but it seemed to work.
yea thas fine. thanks man. i just know mine are off since my high beams are where the lows should be

Both sides bieng the same I got 5/8" for the top and all bottom ones were 11/16" from the bottom of the threads to the bottom of the 4 point star retainer. The clip on the plug should be facing up Jake, that's funny how you have them- cross eyed!
