I need more power

Well i thought i wanted a new truck to haul my car and trailer but after thinking about it i really dont want another truck payment and to be honest i really like my 02, but its def lacking the power i would like it to have.. I need some suggestions on what i could do to it as far as bolt-ons that will give me the best bang for the buck, while i build another 5.4 that will have a eaton supercharger on it.. I was thinking about a Cold Air kit (K&N), Magnaflow catback with high flow cats, and an Edge Evolution to top it off.. Am i on the right track? Anything you would add or change?

Thanks, Scott

Just re-gear the truck. If its a 2wd then its $600 or so and youll be better off than with the cold air and the exhaust, but those would DEFINITELY help. If you are going to buy all those things anyways you be spending more than cost to re-gear so do it from the get-go.

Its a 4wd and i daily drive this truck and i use it alot on long trips to haul my car to different race tracks and i dont want to kill myself with even worse gas mileage than i already get so i figured just stick with the 3.73s

Only way you are going to get a large gain in power would be by forced induction or different sets of cams. There are little things here and there like the exhaust and intake that will open things up more, but out of the intake, exhaust, programmer I cant see you picking up more than 25-35 horses out of it. Sure you will notice the difference though. You can get E-fans and Under drive pulleys which will help out as well. Your 5.4/eaton combo will be a night and day difference from what you are driving around right now, and you said thats coming. I just dont see you getting a ton of power right now without building up your engine alot is all.

Also, I know this could be from using larger tires, but I have 4:56s in my truck and still manage 15-16 mpg range mixed driving.

I am not trying to discourage you from the ideas you have AT ALL, and because you race I am sure you know already that big time power=big time $$$.

If you need more power to pull a vehicle on a trailer, then you should just fix what's broke. I've been trailering from cars to full size conversion vans across a few states for years with a 5four,- in a half ton 4x4. No problems whatsoever. The 5.4L can handle that one fairly easy.

Thats what the engine i am building will be fed with. Its going to be a 5.4 with built bottom end, Ported heads, blower cams, KB (2.6) or whipple (3.4), full exhaust and all the other supporting mods..

Just looking for something to make it up the MANY hills i have to go up and down alil easier.

if you are seriously building that motor and you are looking at some bolt ons in the mean time. I would be looking at mods that would compliment your new build. This is what I would be looking at doing... Long tube headers, rest of the exhaust, electric fans, gears, and tunes. I wouldn't waste my time with aftermarket intakes, underdrive pulleys, or larger throttle bodies because all of them will be useless on that motor.

I used to have a procharger on my f150 and it was a great ride. My 4x4 would really motivate from stock. I have taken it off and miss it. I have since added 456 gears that is great right now for pulling. No gas mileage loss. My plan is to add turbo for more power now,but would go back to Procharger if turbo does not work out. I am installing Efans again also as the first time the relays kept burning out. This time putting together a Lincoln Mark VIII with a heavy duty 80 amp relay.

I'd go with gears , headers and exhaust that would compliment you on the next build.
