Cluster swap.

I'm looking to replace cluster in my 2000 Ford F-150 4x4, XL 7700 series truck.

As of right now the cluster has no tach. and I would like to replace it with a cluster from a truck equipped with a tach. Is this a direct plug and play swap? What do I need to know. Can the mileage be calibrated into the new tachometer?

Thanks,

Derek

it will plug and play after a trip to the dealer to get the PATS calibrated to the new cluster, and they can transfer the mileage over to the new cluster I believe

Will the truck run without having the cluster calibrated? I need to get it from the garage to the dealer after I install it, and I'd rather drive than tow it there.

Thanks,

Derek

Cool

HI!... I bought a "99" Lightning cluster new from the Ford dealer and had it installed in my "99" F-150. I made a appointment at the dealer. I took everything apart for the tech. Drove it there with just the cluster sitting in the dash. Brought him the new Lightning cluster. All he had to do is unplug the old one and plug in the new one. Then he had to hook the truck up to a computer to calibrate the cluster with the PATS system and the PCM. Took about 35 minutes all together. I re-installed the dash when I got home. Not paying $100 a hour labour for something I can do myself. lol!

Cool

HI!... I think I paid just over a $100 for it, if I remember correctly. 1 hour minimum charge plus taxes. I'm in Canada though.

Bumping old thread...
I have 2003 XL with no tach (dig odo). I got a hold of -01 Expedition console with tach (dig odo).
I was under inpression that this is a straightforward job, but require a trip to dealer to reprogram the PATS.

I've searched the forum and got conflicting info: there are posts telling that Expedition clusters differ with F150 and to enable tach needs a wire?

Now before I book an appointment with dealer, can somebody clarify these:

1) Do all official Ford dealers have equipment to reprogram the PATS?

2) I thought that mileage is stored in ECM and cluster is just a display. Based on some posts, it seems that mileage is stored in cluster. Are all Ford dealers capable of transferring the mileage? What is the required equipment (NGS?)?

3) Is there need for wire to get tach working?

4) Is there any other reprogramming that needs to be done (ECM)?

5) Is there a difference between F150 and Expedition clusters or are they all the same?

6) What is the typical dealer charge for cluster swap?

here's what I can help:

1.) Some, but not ALL

2.) They work hand in hand. If one side isnt working, the other wont either.

3.) No

4.) No

5.) No

6.) See above. One hour, most shops label it as a "diagnostic charge" ($75-$100)
