lol, yea, it's behind the cluster, twist and pull. You might be able to swap it with another behind there. My fuel light bulb hasn't went, that I recall, but others have.
Just above E on my 98.

turn your key to the "ON" position without starting the truck and all your Annunciation lights will light up. if the low fuel light isnt one of them, its blown. refer to my cluster color change swap if you need help removing the cluster
that light came on in my truck once, and that is before I even baught it. Long Story. We (me and my parents) went to the dealer to see about getting me a new vehicle (85 olds at the time, tranny was going) Me and my mom had been there 2 days before and had the options of either a dodge dakota r/t low and black or a red dodge 1t 3500 Dually running gasoline, went there 2 days later with both parents (dad had better crdit so he bought the truck in his name) and the dakota was gone and dad said no to the 1ton. They just got the 150 in so we took it for a test drive, while going around the block we noticed the "Low fuel" light was on and the needle was on empty. we got back to the lot, shut it off, and said we'll take it and when they went to start it to give me a full tank of gas it wouldn't start so they had to get a gas can to get it to start.

Then the light works.
You can always carry a 5 gallon container of gas around with you then run it until either the light comes on or you run out of gas if you're really determined to see how it works.

I've only seen the light once with my truck running, personally I'm a fan of keeping more than a 1/4 in 'em at all times...
I would not run it that low (expecially in cold weather) but it's your truck your choice...

I don't rely on the low fuel light.
Instead, when I fill up I hit the trip reset on the odometer.
Then I know when it reads 400 I'm about to start walking.
When I do drive the truck I know about what my round trip will be.
I always check the trip meter before I leave the house as the gas stations I frequent are near my home.
If the trip meter tells me I don't have the miles remaining to make it back to home base easily, I just fill up before I leave.
Uusally the math works where the low fuel light will come on in the process but, I pay it no mind.
I don't drive the truck everyday so this simple process has served me well.
