1997 - 2003 F-150

4x4 not engaging

4x4 not engaging

ok here is what i got. I turn the **** in the cab and I hear a click at the transfer case but nothing. It will not engage. any ideas where to begin.

check vacuum lines to your front diff, they run to a pair of solenoids behind ur battery up against the fire wall... check those lines make sure they are good and your solenoids pull vac when theyre suppose to.

Does the 4x4 indicator light turn on? Does it prove out at start up?

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground. Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft. If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case. If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

If he hears the click but nothing happens he may be having the same problems im having.

series of clicks, lights up, no engagement, will not drop 4x4 light. just a guess. we'll wait for his reply
