I used to have a reg cab long bed. It was a 97' but it had the 4.2, which I think was more common being that it was a base model XL work truck. I'd say you do have a pretty rare truck there, take good care of er'. Here's my old 97', it was a great first truck.

Hi Nate,
Yes, your truck is rare. Most likely the orginal owner ordered that configuration and waited for it to get built like I did.
The 5.4L was in high demand back then. Ford put them in high dollar trucks, which a regular cab by rule, was not.

They were so short on 5.4L in 1998, that Ford decided it could only put the 4.6L in the NASCAR model that year. That was a real head scratcher but, gives you an idea of how it went on 5.4 distribution.

Wow, I didnt see that this even was posted... something was messed up after I posted it.
it looks from what I can tell that my truck was purchased from a large corp. probably in a lot of like 20 or so trucks.

here is what she looks like now. It needs a new paint job BAD! but all in all looks fantastic!
The truck has 280,000 miles on it. I am not sure if its the original engine or not. but the guy I got it from said it had a newer engine. who knows... but it runs great. MmmBuckles your truck is exactly the color I want. I cant wait to paint it.

here are some closer looks I too them in my garage. I will post more when I paint it.

also the check engine light comes on... the guy I got it from had it checked out. but I still have not. but he said that the reason was one of the plugs. I think one of the coilpacks might be messed up. but I dont know. I am going to have to go get it checked out and figure out the codes. and then I will get back. What are some things I should do right off the bat with this truck. anyone have any ideas?

ok I got the check engine light checked out. and the code was P0401. I guess it has something to do with the EGR Valve. I am not to sure what this is. but I did do a search on here and had a lot of stuff come up. So my question is. what is more common to fix on the 5.4 concerning the EGR? anyone know what I should do first? would driving it like it is hurt it? or should I fix it asap? Thanks for the help!

Nate, I'm not 100% sure about your set-up, but it is common on vehicles that have an EGR valve that the passageway gets clogged with carbon. If your truck has an EGR valve, unbolt it and check for build-up in the flow groove, then clear the code. Welcome to F150Online

ok just to make 100% sure what this EGR valve is. this is the EGR Valve?
And this is the dpfe sensor?

Some people say that the dpfe sensor is the cause of the problem usually? What do you think? I will try blowing on the green striped hose and see what happens.

po401 can be a tough code to diagmoss it probably is NOT the egr may be the DPFE and with all them miles is is likely you have a clog in the vacuum system for it. There is a good thread going on over in the v8 engine forum that will help you.
