Oil filter - can't get it off

I just purchased this F150 super crew FX 4X4. I was going to change oil & filter today. The person that designed the placement of the filter is not my best friend. The last fellow that changed the filter used his muscle to tighten it. To get it OFF don't I turn it counterclockwise? Also what type of tool makes it easier to get the filter off? ......THANKS in advance for your help!!! By the way it is the 5.4 liter engine.

Yes, counterclockwise. Go to sears or some other hardware store and get yourself a oil filter wrench that has at least 3 "jaws" on it.

Oil Filter - can't get it off

I just purchased this '03 F150 Super Crew FX 4X4 - 5.4 V8. The filter must have been put on by superman. Does it turn counterclock to get it off? And what does it take besides my hand power to make this an easier job??? ....Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!

Lefty loosey; Righty tighty. Try a strap wrench. The position of the filter makes it hard to get off by hand.

Don't know if it's in the same spot as my 2000, but a cap style "wrench" (the cap fits on the end of the filter) makes removal pretty easy. I use a stubby ratchet because of tight quarters. If you have to buy a cap style wrench, see what brand filter is on the truck now, and do a trial fit at the store. If you have the room, a band style filter wrench will do wonders over using your hand too. Righty tighty, lefty loosie.

This is what I use on my truck also. Even though I only put my filters on hand tight, more often than not, they are too tight to get back off by hand later. Just got the auto parts store, find the filter for your truck, and try the wrenches until you find one that fits.

I just went through the same ordeal on a new truck I feel for ya!

https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...what-pita.html

Just picked up on of these from E-bay (from Matco) for $10.49. Like the design as the more you crank the tighter it gets! .... BTW - I ruined two other types of wrenches last time. Hopefully it won't be three!

Amen to that

I think you'll need your hand power even with all those tools and you'll still be having to use your hand .
