Ford F-150 vs F1: 68 Years of Progress

By -

Take a look back at the evolution of the Ford F-150, before it became the Ford F-150!

Progress. The inevitable, ever-changing evolution of things. It’s visible in the world around us, from changing landscapes to sparkling technology. But few industries reflect change quite as profoundly as the automotive world. We often take for granted just how far cars have come in the span of a few decades. And especially trucks. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at a new Ford F-150 next to this 1950 F1.

Sure, styling has obviously evolved over the years, as have powertrains. But when Ford build the F1, which preceded the F-100, they didn’t even bother to worry about things like ergonomics, visibility, and comfort. Back then, trucks were made for one purpose, and one purpose only. To work. You didn’t drive them every day or use them as family haulers. That’s what cars were for.

And that’s just the first of many interesting evolutionary differences between the Ford F-150 and F1 that are pointed out in this video from The Fast Lane Truck. Back when the original F-truck hit the market, ease of use and driveability were in their infancy as well. Shifting between first and second required a double clutch to keep them from stalling out. But hey, it had a push button start, which is pretty cool!

Still, it’s a great reminder of just how far trucks have come in mere decades. Today, we’ve got giant luxury cruisers that are just as capable of crossing the country in comfort as they are towing huge trailers. They might not have the charming, timeless style or character from the old days, but they do return 400+ hp and 20+ miles per gallon. All while keeping your tush cool with air conditioned seats. And that, friends, is what we call progress.
