Please help picking new tires..

Hey guys need some help, I am looking to get some new tires, right now I have the stock tires 275/65/18 on my FX4. So when I have been calling around to see how big I can go, everybody has been telling me 285/65/18 is the biggest?

I am a little confused because a lot of yall have bigger tires than 285/65/18 on stock wheels, I have mentioned to them that i have the 2.5" leveling kit but they said it doesn't matter and that 285/65/18 is the biggest?

So what can I do? Do i just tell them that I want to go bigger than 285/65/18? what is the biggest or what would be considered a good size, I want to go a little taller and wider, and I was hoping for 305/70 or 65 on the 18" stock wheels. Can somebody please help? The tire I want to go with are Nitto Trail Grapplers MT

A lot of member's run 305x65x18's on stock wheel's with little or no rubbing. These are close to 34 inches tall but are made by BFG. You can also squeeze on some 35x12.5x18's but you may have some rubbing.

Thanks for the info PawPaw, i was also looking at some BFG's but i like the price of the Nitto's a lot more, haha but if I dont want any rubbing should I go with 295/65?

I think you mean a 285x65 which is a 33" tire. Those will clear easily but you will probably wish later that you went a little taller.

I was not too sure what the next size down was from 305/65 figured it was 295/65, oh well, but i do thank you for the correction, help, advice, and time. I will definitely go with 305/65 and post the pix once i get them installed. Thank you PawPaw

The 305x65x18 may be the ideal size for a leveled 4x4. Just my 2 cent's. Anyway looking forward to the pics.

If you have a 2.5" leveling kit then a 305/65/18 on stock rims will fit fine with out rubbing. I just put 305/65/18 on my stock rims and have pics of it in this thread if you want to check them out: New Pics: BFG 305/65/18 AT KO, 2" Bilsteins, 1.5" AAL I have no rubbing so far. The tires I great and I love the look but I did lose a couple mpg and a little get up and go since the tires a heavier and larger diameter than stock. I have the 5.4L w/3.55 gears. If you have 3.73 the performance drop will not be as noticeable with larger tires.

Where in Texas are you? Dallas here... I just put on BFG 285/65/18 M/T Which i would have put on 285/70 or 75 instead...

Good to know I appreciate all the comments, P185 I saw the pix.. Looks good.. Thanks for the advice. And Wayne I am from the Rio Grand Valley, about 8 hours south of Dallas, about 1 hour away from South Padre, and 15 mins from Mexico, originally from McAllen, TX which would be considered one of the bigger towns here. You can alwas google map it and it will pop up if your bored haha.

The largest size you can fit using the OEM wheels is a 35x12.50-18 (305/70-18). They will rub the control arms slightly at full steering lock. Anything smaller will fit with no rubbing. The shops you have been calling are just going by a sizing chart they have, which are always very conservative. As you see, you have access to first hand knowledge from thousands of pelple who own trucks just like yours.

Wandell, thanks for the info, i will keep that in mind about the 35/12.5/18 little worried about the rubbing though, is there something i can do to prevent it from happening? Also would that look like too much tire? Thanks for the input.

No, there's really nothing you can do because a 35x12.50 is pushing the absolute limit in tire size. A lot of member here run that size, but I'd stick with a 33 inch tire personally with only a leveling kit.

Thanks for everything Wandell, one quick question though 295/70/18, how big would those be? Are those comp to 33s? I know that the 295 isn't as wide as the 305 and that 70 means it's a little taller, can somebody please clear that up for me?

i just checked it out at a shop that does lifts and stuff for a lot of people here and they told me i could run 35s with no rubbing...06 fx4 with 2.5 inch level
