Hm I think that 285/70/17 will fit with a leveling kit, I know for a fact that they wont with a stock truck. I had this same problem a couple of months ago. Discount tire would tell me over and over that the 285's would fit but i knew they wouldnt so i left that place without tires, so i went through a friend at ford, and 265/70/17 is the biggest you can go on a stock 4x2 ford truck. I have BFG All Terrains KO. They look great! You will love them.
But i do regret not getting a leveling kit and the 285's but the 265's are fine.
Hope this helps!!

I actually got the 285/70/17 BFG A/T's on my 02 F-150 4x2. There is some pics of them in my gallery below, sorry they are taken from a camera phone. I didn't notice any problems other then once I thought I heard rubbing while turned lock to lock. I don't make a habit of that though. Anyway, I got them to fit but I also did just get the 6" RCD kit installed last week.

I will post some pics of my lift tomorrow. I had been waiting to wash all the salt off my truck since we had that ice storm to get some decent pics. I actually did keep the 285's on with my 6" lift. I went with the RCD lift and it called for 33" tires, which my 285/70/17 come out to more or less. I think it would look a little better with 35's but it still looks good to me. I also kept my stock rims with 4.5" back spacing.
