Exclamation trying to fit tires, torsion bars wont turn??

ehy guys i need your help! my tires just got here today! i got pro comp xtreme all terrain 325-60-r18 mounted on 18x9.5 eagles 102 with 4 5/8 backspacing. Today i tried to turn the torsion bars to give myself alittle room, and i couldent do it. I have never done this before so im not really sure what to do, but i put a 3 ton jack under the front of the car on the frame, jacked it up untill i got some daylight under the front tires, hopped under there and tried to tighten the screws and i couldetn turn them... do i need to grease them? do i need to jack it up higher? what is the deal? or will it just be really hard to get it going or something

i would appreciate hellp soon. i want these babbies to fit, but there too big right now!

thanks

You need a breaker bar and a pretty strong arm, I would recommend using some sort of pentrating oil like zep reserve or wd-40. Lots of it... Good luck

soak the bolt and key with pb blasted and let them sit for a while then try a pull bar with a pipe over the end to give you a little more leverage, wouldnt use a rachet though, you might strip the gears.

I'd soak the adjustment bolts with WD/40, penetrating oil, etc. You should be able to turn them with a large ratchet or a breaker bar pretty easily. A pull bar/breaker bar is just a long handle (18 to 24 inches) that you attach sockets to.

I had to use a breaker bar on mine... No way they would've turned with a rachet. Also, isn't the front end of you truck supposed to be jacked up?

I would not jack up the truck, just tighten the bars with the truck sitting on the ground. This way you can measure how much to adjust.

I would actually make sure I jacked the truck up, I have heard of people breaking components in and around the torsion bar by not jacking up the truck.

fitment

LAXWARRIOR:

Tell me how the fit is without the Torsion bars being turned.
I am after the same tire and rim size for my NEW 05 F-150 SCREW 4X4.
I want to stuff the wheel wells and do no lift I am not really concerned about a little tire rub when turning but of course I dont want to have them rub all the time. For me I will be needing to be able to get in to the parking garages downtown now and then. (Cant do it in my Super Duty anymore) I was hoping to get 35" on 18" rims...Got any Pics ???

If you are trying this with a standard 3/8" socket setup, then forget it.... Even a 1/2" rachet will not give you enough leverage. You will need a 1/2" 'breaker bar' to turn that bolt. A breaker bar will be about 18" long (or more) and have no rachet mechanism that can fail.

Just to be a "MOMMY", I hope you put jack stands under the front end when you jacked it up and were torquing on those bolts!

good luck!

That sounds pretty dumb to me. If you don't jack the truck up first, not only are you fighting against the torsion bar, but your actually having to lift the weight of the front of the truck up. Why not take the weight of the truck out of the equation? Just do equal turns on both sides, drive around for a day or so, and then measure to make sure they are equal and adjust accordingly.
