Tire Size

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I just got a 1998 F-150 4x4, (well I pick it up in 3 days) and I was wondering what the largest size tire was that I could fit on there stock, it has 235/70/16's right now, maybee /75's/?. I was wondering if LT255/85R16's would fit, would that be like a 33" tire?. Any help would be great I am new to the 4x4ing world.

or what about a LT285/75/R16?

You can easiley fit a 285/75-16 on your truck. That size works out to be a 33x11.50-16.

Yeah, those will fit. A 305/70-16 works out to be a 33x12.50. Really, you need a wider wheel for those because they recommend an 8 to 10 inch wide wheel and the OEM wheels are 16x7. Usually running too narrow a wheel will make the center portion of the tread wear slightly faster than normal, similar to running too much air pressure. If you plan on going to a wider aftermarket wheel, I'd recommend the 305's. If you are gonna keep the stock wheels forever, I'd suggest the 285's. If you go to an aftermarket wheel, I'd suggest a 16x10. You will have to trim the front bumper's lower valance a little, but they look a lot better in my opinion.

I drove my 97' 4x4 off the lot in March of 96.

After 5k miles I replaced my stock 265's with 305/70/R16's on the stock rims.

With proper rotations, every 5K miles, I was able to get 65K on the first set. I now have 110K and the same Goodyear 305's are going strong....

If I did not have the factory hard mudflaps (which I like) and was willing to trim the front airdam, my Goodyear dealer said I could go with one size larger..... but that was it....

Good Lord! How many miles do you think you would have gotten with the recommended size wheel?

How long should you get out of a decent set of tires?

The tires I am running are Goodyear AT/S tires. Not the factory ones. The ones with the two large grooves in the tread. The original tires were Goodyear RTS's. I hated them.....

The only reason I had to replace them at 65K was that when I took the truck in for a rotation and balance, the dealer said, and showed me the tire rot in the tread.

I really wanted to put MTR's on the truck at that time, but I was short of cash so I had to put four more AT/S's back on.

My next set willl be MTR's.... or XTerrain.

Oh, by the way, did I say I had about 10K miles of offroad use on that first set of tires.....

It's a 4X4 for gods sake, so if you don't take it off road, then the extra $5K for that 4x4 package is a waist....
