The stock 16's are 7" wide, and 17's are 7.5" wide.
The widest tire any tire manufacturers recommend for a 7" wide wheel is 265's. You may want to consider this in your decision.
With 7.5" wide wheel I think its 285's.
Yes, some some guys put wider tires on these wheels/rims ... but that can void all tire warranties. And ... in the event of a tire related accident, one could be held liable for going beyond all tire manufactures recommendations.
