Angry spare tire stolen

New to trucks and apparently taken advantage of after I discovered my spare tire missing from my 1999 f-150. I quickly learned how easy it is to gain access to this tire. Anyone with the same experience. What ways are there to protect the spare from being stolen?

The thief should be caught. I mean a guy on a unicycle should be easy to spot.
Personally, I couldn't afford the lock so I let all the air out of my spare to foil a robber. Imagine the look on his face. hehe.

Spare Tire, I am sorry you got ripped off. The information you can get here will save you money, time and aggravation that will more than make up for your loss, so welcome aboard.
That UserName is unique. You will always be linked to your first post. Just be glad it wasn't a 'Blown Head Gasket'

If you have a tonneau cover, or camper shell, put the spare in the bed. Advantages of doing this:
1. The spare is more difficult for a thief to get.
2. No damage to the tire from the under-bed "rack".
3. In case of a snow or ice storm, you don't have to woory about the "rack" being frozen in place.
As you can likely tell, each of these has caused me problems in the past [I have yet to have a flat in good weather, or when the spare has sufficient air in it].

Question

This spare tire lock wont work for my f-150 I don't know if others are different than mine but on my f-150 lariat, sportside you can't lock the spare. It is held up by a wire with a metal thing that pulls it up under the truck so that lock wouldn't work. Sorry I have no idea what to call that metal thing.

speedygfan,
I think this lock blocks the hole on the back where the crank is inserted to lower the spare tire. It should work with all the F-150's.

I wish the hole was blocked by the tailgate, like on an Explorer. Then you could just keep your tailgate locked...

Spare Tire

Another option is to buy a good cable lock from a bike shop which you can thread through the center hole in the tire and the frame of the truck. The thicker the cable, the better to thwart those thieves with bolt cutters. Also buy a corrosion resistant lock. I wrapped my lock with electrical tape to help keep out moisture. On some vehicles, it is possible to cut the cable on the spare tire hanger, which would render the Ford tailgate
hole cover solution useless. I work with one individual who actually cut out a round piece of 3/4 exterior grade plywood, and bolted it to the bottom of his Durango's spare tire before hoisting it into position to prevent his cable from being cut. Hope his wife doesn't have to change a tire! P.S. Your insurance should cover the tire and rim. Good Luck.

I had the dealer install this lock before I picked up the truck. I still have my spare.

Red face

Raoul
Why don't you just put the spare in the garage?
With no air it won't be much good if you get a flat.

My truck originally came with a spare tire lock, but for some reason or another, somebody took it off, at the dealership, and the 1/4"diameter pin that goes threw the shaft was lost. For anybody that doesn't know how to install these, the 1/2" diameter shaft is installed from inside of the bumper, threw the hole, with the end of the shaft that has the 1/4" diameter hole, hangs out of the bumper. Slip the back part, of the 2 part locking case with the key hole, onto the 1/2" shaft. Slip the 1/4" pin threw the hole and cap the lock with the front piece. When you turn it with the key, the little arm inside slides behind the pin, which prevents the shaft from sliding out backwards.
