Post Where can I get performance heads for a '97 4.6L?

Anyone know where I can get a good set of "bolt-on" performance heads to replace the stock ones on my '97 4.6?

From what i have read, the 99-01 heads flow much better and are only about $500 for a pair complete from the dealer. Check the www.corral.net modular BBS for the best source on modifing the 4.6.

Ford svo has some real nice looking 4.6 heads. They cost a bunch & claim 40 or 50 hp. I think they're for Mustangs & don't know if they fit the trucks. The tech guys should know. Search ford svo on your browser. This was in Texas (Huston or Dallas).

HI!... ELMO : FORD MOTORSPORT sells a set of high performance cylinder heads in their FMS book for $895.00(U.S) These heads will give you a 35H.P increase ONLY on "96" - "98" model 4.6L's. It's only those years because FORD came out with the POWER IMPROVED cylinder heads on the 5.4L and "MUSTANG 4.6L in "99". These "POWER IMPROVED" heads are basicly the same heads that are in the FMS book. I just picked up a set of "99" "PI" heads for $500(CAN) complete with valves and cams. I'm plannining on getting these heads fully ported and polished and install them on a race built "98" 5.4L crate engine. Should be good for 415H.P naturally asperated. If you can get a set of used "99" "PI" 5.4 heads from the junk yard, they will bolt right onto your 4.6L engine. Try to get them with the cams if you can. The older 4.6 cams don't have enough lift to support the better flowing 5.4 head. Ford changed the cam profile slightly in "99". I talked to SEAN HYLAND MOTORSPORTS and they told me that a set of STAGE 3 "99" "PI" 5.4 heads are good for a max of 55H.P increase over stock. Since my "98" 5.4 crate engine only came with 235H.P (non-"PI" heads), by bolting on a set of STAGE 3 "PI" heads will increase overall H.P by 80H.P. That's 55H.P for STAGE 3 head work and another 25H.P for just the "PI" heads. That's a total of 315H.P and then you add your normal H.P increasing mods. If your 4.6 is making 220H.P and you install a set of 5.4 "PI" heads with cams I figure you will make an additional 35H.P easily. Then if you have the money, get a STAGE 3 head job done on them and you will be making some serious power. You could be at the 300H.P mark.Hope this helps you out.

Neal - it's nice to have power-mongers like you around here. Since you know the most about the swapping of heads, would it work with the 4.6 stock intake or would there be any modifications that may be need.

By the way, good luck on your case when it comes up. And I wouldn't suggest telling the judge anything about your quest for the most HP. Just stress the fact that your glad no one was hurt over 'a cheap faulty spring'.

HI!... CAPTAINOBLIVIOUS : The stock 4.6 intake should bolt right back up to these heads. These are "MODULAR" engines and most things on them are interchangable. You might have to do some gasket porting between the cylinder head intake ports and the intake's intake ports though. That is very minor though.

Neal,
So when you have to port the cyl gasket to make it work what gasket do you use? 4.6 or 5.4 and also what about the intake gasket port that also(4.6 or 5.4)? You realy have me thinking about doing this if it works. Also I bet a set of headers would be the way to go with this mod if your going to do it right!!! I looked the "PI" heads that Ford uses and its the same Part # as the lightning!!!

HI!... SUMMITMAN : By "GASKET PORTING", this means you take the intake gasket and lightly bolt it down to your ported 5.4 head. Then you take a very sharp exacto blade and trim the gasket port back untill it matches the newly ported port. Then you take the gasket and transfer it over to the intake manifold it will be matching. Then you trace the newly cut port hole onto the smaller intake port. Then get out your porting tool and slowly remove material until the port matches the newly cut gasket. This proceedure insures that when you bolt down the intake to the head that the ports will match and not cause a restriction or turbulence of the incoming air flow. I think the 5.4 and 4.6 intake gasket are the same but you would have to check the part #'s. I would probably go with the 5.4 gasket if you can;t find out. Good luck on your project.

Where can I get a Ford Motorsports catalog from? I got a "Ford Racing Performance Parts" catalog from Jeg's but it doesn't have the heads for the 4.6 that Neal spoke of. Also, does anyone know a dealer who has the 5.4 "PI" heads for cheaper than $720?

if you bolt on these 5.4l heads on to a 4.6, if i decide to buy say headers, or a supercharger, will i now be looking for 5.4 parts, or still the 4.6? probably stupid question, oh well, sorry!

coolsvile,

The deck hight of the 5.4 is longer than the 4.6 so the 5.4 V is taller than the 4.6 v. V v The space between the tops of the V is longer so the intake manifold on the 5.4 has to be wider to fill the void. Using a Power improved head will not fill that space so you will still need 4.6 parts.

Elmo,

Check out http://www.fordpartsonline.com/
they qouted me around $400.00 US each for 5.4 Power Improved Heads complete with Valves and Cams. I am now putting all my spare ¢ in the piggy bank.

Regards
