Post 400hp club

Fella's, I may have eclipsed the 400hp (flywheel)mark today. I made a pull at the dyno just to get some air/fuel numbers and to my surprise, the truck made 342hp at the rear wheels with the new Superchip. There were so many wires hooked up to my truck I thought I was in the hospital! Also, the guys at the dyno feel the truck is still limited and is actually capable of 360rwhp with some fine tuning.

So I figure that if I have 342 at the rear wheels, then I add the 65hp that is presumedly lost through the drivetrain, I have 407 at the flywheel. Could be more could be less, neverthless, the #'s still look good.

Mike, I will call you Monday, I have a lot to discuss.

HI!... LUTWILLER : Those are some real good #'s your getting there! CONGRADULATIONS!! You and I are both H.P FREAKS I think!LOL! I'm going a little bit different route to get my H.P though. I just bought a 5.4 crate engine from a buddy that he was going to install in his MUSTANG but would'nt fit. I plan on getting 415-425H.P out of it naturally asperated. Then add a KEENE BELL at 10 PSI and possible a 125H.P N.O.S kit. To bullet proof the block I'm going to be installing a BILLET crank, BILLET rods and FORGED pistons with a main cap girtle. SEAN HYLAND told me this set-up I'll be using should be able to withstand 750H.P and 7500RPM! I don't plan on going past 6200RPM though. Now if that makes me a "H.P FREAK", THEN SO BE IT!!!lol! Once again congradulations on your dyno #'s.

HI!... JOSHMAN : The crank, rods, pistons, rings and girtle will be about $5500(CAN). That's pretty good deal for that much stuff. Put it this way, I have $14,000(CAN) in my 351-W in my PRO STREET RANGER. Hope this helps you out.

lutwiller - Do you have any dynocharts of the vortech, or can you tell me how much boost you get at different rpm's from it.

OK, Here's a dumb question. How do I put a picture with my message? I've tried the cut and paste method and it doesn't seem to work.

Captain, The picture thing is not working, so here are some numbers:

3000rpm's - 200hp
3500 - 250
4000 - 290
4500 - 320
4900 - 342

We took the truck out of OD, held it at 2000 in third gear and carefully pressed on the accelerator, so as to not allow the truck to drop into second. We tried to have the truck at WOT by 3000. The injectors were maxed out at 4900. Going to try 42's.

lutwiller - thanks, thats was informative enough. If you ever can get a hold of boost numbers at various rpm's I;'d be interesting in seeing those also.

Thanks again.

HI!... LUTWILLER : I don't think you are maxing out your injectors as much as you are going past the cams profile to make H.P. The 5.4 engine's cam profile was designed to make power up to 4500RPM (260h,p) You were WAY past that on your dyno run, 4900RPM. With you and I having installed 4.10 gears we kind of CHEAT this because especially in 1ST gear the 4.10 gears "WHIP" ore engines up in RPM quickly to give us the feeling that were making power up high in the RPM range but were not. With some of the more popular mods for our trucks it is actually possible to move our power peak up slightly as the engine breathes better. In your case FORCE feeding it air with the supercharger. There is a mathamatical equation to figure out your injector size needed. You take your max H.P and divide it by TWO and then divide that # by how many cylinders you have. In our case that is 8. Taking your max H.P of 407H.P at the flywheel and divide that be TWO, you get 203.5H.P, Now take that # and divide it by 8 (# of cylinders), you get a injector size of 25.4lbs needed to support your 407H.P. So as you can see your 30lb injectors still have a ton left to go before you MAX them out. If you do the math a 30LB injector will support up to 480H.P at the flywheel. Hope this helps you out. Once again good dyno #'s.

Hi Neal, I scratched my head on the injector thing too. But the computer that was hooked up to my truck plainly read that the injectors were at 100% @4900 each and every time we made a pull. I had gone over injector size with Mike.T months ago and he felt that 30's would be sufficient. When the motor hit's 4900 I am experiencing detonation and with my truck changing gears at 5400--well, you get the picture.

Several things could contribute to this: too much timing, not enough fuel (air/fuel ratio is 12.8) and of course not having enough injector. We have pulled timing out of the Superchip over and over agian without much luck, so we have to assume that the computer at the dyno is correct when it shows injector capability. So I hope I am making the right move--42's are not cheap especially after you have already purchased 30's!

Neal, thanks for your comments. I will keep you posted.

lutwiller, you can have your 30's modified to flow 47 #'s/hr. Chris Johnson at JMS, or many others (using hid kit) can do it for you. I believe the price is $125? I take it that you aren't using an FMU?

I used the 47#'ers (modded 30's) on my 94 Lightning to the tune of 414 rwhp (no FMU). Chris Johnson kept giving me more pulse width to cure some upper RPM lean conditions, but it turned out to be I needed more fuel pump. It sounds like you may need more pump, or maybe just a Kenne Bell Boost-a-Pump. Does the Vortech kit come with just an inline pump? I would opt for a 255 lph in the tankm and a T-Rex inline, that should supply plenty of pressure and volume. Superchips can deal with the 47# injectors, but they need some specs that your scan tool can provide.

Nice work!!
