Fuel pump or Fuel pump assembly?

Hello everyone I determine that my fuel pump is bad, but when I went to my local auto parts store they asked me if i wanted the fuel pump or the fuel pump assembly, big difference in price too! What is the difference? This is for my 2001 F150 SC 5.4l.

The difference is the whole thing like pictured or just a generic jet pump that you have to clamp in place in the assy. I have not had much luck with the aftermarket brands and stick to OE on fuel pumps. Here is what i found.

Have you tried a Delphi pump? Available at rockauto for less. Claim to be a 150,000 mile pump.

Just replaced the second fuel pump on my 99 Expedition. I was warned that replacing only the fuel pump, and not the entire assembly, sending unit and all, would only be a temporary fix. They seem to last about 10 years, at least in my case.

I'm getting nervous about mine due to the difficulty of replacing it. Still running the OE pump at 18 yrs and 162k miles, or at least I haven't replaced it in the last 10 yrs and 92k miles while I've owned it. I've also wondered about whether to replace just the pump or the whole thing. Probably would go with the whole thing, again due to the difficulty of replacing it.
