Ford 5.4 vs Vortec 5.7
There is a guy here at work who has a 98 S/C Silverado 5.7 Vortec w/ a K&N. He seems to think he can beat my totally stock 99 S/C 5.4? I've made 1 pass in it, 15.82@84.1, can I beat his truck? Also, a neighbor just got a 285hp version S/C Silverado, how would I do against him?

Eric, you should be getting much better times from your (is that S/C meaning super charged?) S/C 5.4l. If both of you are supercharged, it would be a close race. You would just have to line up and give it a shot. If you are both stock, you should be able to beat the 5.7 vortec. I think they are running the mid to low 16's.

I think that the 5.7 would probably beat the 5.4
The Triton is a good motor and all but you just can't compete with the low down grunt of the chevy small block. I see it this way, a 3/4 ton5.7 is a pretty quick truck despite the weight. A Superduty w/5.4 is a slow, gutless, gas guzzler. I have owned both of these trucks, so I'm speaki from experience.
Just my two cents.

Didn't the Chevy 2500 with the 5.7 have some things done to the engine to make it more powerful/torquey than the 5.7 in the 1500?
If you saw my post in the Computer Chips section, the new 5.3L engine (2000) has 285 horses and a very flat torque curve from 1600 RPM to 4000 (max torque is at 4000 RPM--325 ft-lbs.)
I dare say, the 2000 5.3L truck is faster than the F-150. I test drove a Supercab F-150 and a long bed Chevy. Best 0-60 in the F-150 was 9.02 seconds. Best 0-60 in the Chevy was 8.72, and it did better passing 60-75mph.
I've been told to give the 5.4 a chance to "learn" how the driver drives, but I dunno if it'd indeed "learn" how to accelerate 0-60 in 8.2-8.5 seconds....

I know for a fact that the 5.7 is faster than the 5.4. My parents have a 99 Suburban
4x4. I have a 2000 F150 4x4 extracab with the 3.55 gears. Up the grade from the desert to San Diego(I-8) I can only do 60mph on the steepest part of the grade. The Suburban will do 80mph easly. The Suburban pulls a load much better too. I am dispointed with my 150,if I was going to do it over,I would get the Superdudy with the V-10.
The main reason for buying a truck is for it's towing abaility. Right???

Sorry Tom, but you must be doin somethin wrong, your truck must have somethin wrong with it, cause it will do faster than 60 up a grade. What engine do you have? And as far as the 5.7 goes, I have the 98 5.4 and I have raced a 97 Z-71 with the 5.7, well I won. Now the 99 and up 150's with the 5.4 have the upgraded HP, so I know it won't have a problem walkin all over the 5.7. You know what, it really dosen't matter, cause who's large and in charge when it comes to a fast truck, the Ford Lightning, and I have experienced that up close (thanks for the ride Nathan). Oh well, in the words of Alan Jackson, "it's Ford country, the whole worlds Ford country".

One more thing, if you wanna truck just to tow with, get the PSD. The V-10 maybe faster and quicker around the town but not as good at pullin like the PSD is. You know you've got power when you can pull a 4 horse tralier with horses up a steep grade and still keep the needle pegged at 90, it's a good feelin, seen it quite a few times. Sorry, but I love the new Super Dutys with the PSD, I don't see how and why people could pass it up, like chosin the GM 6.5 diesel.

That GM 6.5 is a joke. Its embarrasing. Look out for the near future, though. The king of ALL truck engines will be on the road. Vortec 8.1L V-8. 360hp, 470lbs./ft torque. Ford v-10 is king for now.
Hey mudder, you got any buddies over in Arlington that have the 5.4 reg cab? I would like to have a pulling contest. I may lose, but thats all right. Its all in fun. Maybe we can get a boat dealership to let us get identicle boats to tow.
