Ticking sound from 5.4

Hello All,

I am new to the F-150. I just picked up a '99 4x4 5.4L with 36,000 (original) miles. Well I have been noticing that lately when I get on the gas it has a ticking sound. I am not completely new to engines as I had a mustang with a rod knock when I bought it. Well the only reason why I am so confused is that it is only there when I am on the gas, and only in the lower RPM range. Now I have opened my hood and listened and it does not sound metallic at all. I have the service record from the truck, and it was serviced at the Ford dealership every 3,000 miles. I am just so completely stumped because it does increase very slightly through the RPM's but not so much as a rod knock. To me it almost sounds like an exhaust leak? It just sounds more gas then metallic. Any input would be greatly appreciated. As I have perused this forum and your guys knowledge just blows me away. Thank you!

Jon

Yep, or a loose plug . See if you can here with the hood open by revving it up by hand. It's more common that the rear two bolts on the passenger side exhaust manifold break first.

But , with only 36,000 miles and the fact that the spark plugs on many 5.4L's were over-torqued @ the factory about that time. It could very well be a plug.

Hey guys I figured so much. I just was so confused. Oh Btw 5.4 I just wanted to say I am very impressed with your truck. I think it would give my brother in laws lightning a very good run. Thank you all. All I know is that I love this truck, by far saves me a lot of hassle in Michigan. Since all we get is snow, then ice. Thanks all! I will take a look!

Check for a loose plug before it damages the threads.

Ticking Noise

I have a 2004 F150 4x4 5.4. Had a ticking noise, like a valve/rod. The service writer adv it could be a fuel injector... They ended up change the "Canister vent solenoid"
