does anyone know a fairly inexpensive way to get a boost in power. ive got a '98 4.6L and its just not fast enough. any suggestions?

 

don't know about inexpensive but your best bet would prob be underdrive pulleys, electric fan and a programmer(edge evo w/ attitude my suggestion)

 

thanks alot. ive been looking into the edge programers for a while. the only problem is i dont have the cash for one at the moment. would a cold air intake make much of a diff.?

 

The best power upgrade that I made on my 1997 was installing MSD Coil Packs. It was a definate seat of the pants power improvment. Also it upped my MPG by a little over 1.5 mpg. (I'd purchased the "Ignition System Upgrade" from Troyer Performance, I installed the Coils right away, but not the Spark Plugs or wires until much later. The improvement of Power and MPG happend with just the Coils.)

Later I installed underdrive pulleys and Electric Fans and to tell you the truth I couldn't tell if there was any real improvement in power or MPG from those two upgrades.

Again the Coil Pack Upgrade is a definate winner. I've heard that Accel Coil Packs are just as good as ,and some would say better than, the MSD Coil Packs.

I'm curious , How is it possible for coils(ignition spark) to increase HP.

I recently replaced the COP's system on my 98 along with upgraded 19 lb injectors(spray pattern upgrade)..I also installed a series 50 muffler.

Thing is I did this all at once and noticed a jump in HP , I just wonder what mod made the most difference out of the three I chose to do..If it was the coils , I don't understand how - spark, just ignites the fire.

 

I don't know, but it made a difference, and like I said it was only the coils.

The engine and original coil packs had around 190,000 miles when I replaced them. I later read somewhere that coils should be replaced every 50,000 miles.

I know with a Coil Pack system the HP Coils give you a hotter spark because of the Higher Voltage that they put out.

I know MSD makes a Ignition System for COPs. But I've no idea how they do it since it doesn't replace the COPs.

If I were to guess, I'd assume that the COPs and Injectors made the most difference for you.

Yeah , I didn't replace my COP's until I was at 185,000 miles on this 5.4L. Everthing I got came from a 4.6L Romeo Crown Vic motor. New parts, but he couldn't sell as new because they had been bolted to the crate motor.. I got the COP's , Injectors and harness for under $200 US - You sure can't beat that eBay price - no one even bid on this stuff. I needed the harness aswell , only way I could adapt the newer type 3 injectors, they used a different plug.

I figured it was a combination of the add ons together . Old COP's and CoilPacs loose there punch after awhile..

 

190k miles- no wonder they made a difference!
