Mine does the same thing. It started at about 70,000 miles and is still doing it at 92,000 miles. I was advised by a local mechanic that it is an indication that the clutch is going out, but that I should wait until it starts slipping in high gears under load (like pulling hills). I am still waiting for it to start slipping!

A warped clutch plate can cause the shudder that you are describing. This occurs when they have been overheated by excess slipping. Another cause could be oil or grease on the clutch plate, but that usually goes away after a while. If not slipping, you could drive on the clutch a lot longer before replacement, but it sure takes the fun out of it. I have 150,000 kms. on the clutch in my truck and it is still fine, so I would say that 30,000 is early. GlennMc.

my roomate has a 91 chevy 4x4 350 5-spd. his clutch does the same thing, and he thinks its the throw-out bearing. it still clamps up nice and dosent slip, but it does shudder like you're describing. he definatly knows his stuff, but he thinks hes even smarter than he is... no clue if he's right or not but hopefully this helps.
his truck has like 190000 miles, but i doubt its the original clutch (the motor isnt original, so i doubt the clutch is). he hasnt changed it but i bet the guy who he got it from did, so no clue how much time the clutch has on it.
also of note - his getrag tranny shifts like twice as good as my mazda which has a tenth of its mileage... thats annoying for sure!

for some reason this doesn't supprise me... I had a ranger that couldn't get more than 20,000KM out of a clutch... I let them do one clutch job, then 20,000km later, it died... they said they would do the second one on warranty, they did it then charged me $900.00 for the job, which lasted another 20,000KM... it eventually got to the point i had one of the local race shops do it for $400 (clutch included), and put in a cheap lund, and it lasted a lot longer... i have very little faith in the ford clutches...
I also noticed that the burnt clutch smell went away with the new clutch
