97 standard f150 Trans help! !

Hello I have a 97 f150 standard transmission the other day I was driving and I tried to shift to second then it would not go in and it grinded very hard! Then it wouldn't shift into any gear. I then killed the truck and when it's off it shifts fine.but when it's running it had trouble shifting in sometimes it shifts perfect but most of the time it acts weird. I have to kill it say stop lights to put putty in first. Any ideas what this would be? Pressure plate slave cylindermaybe? please help! Thanks! Grant.

How does the pedal feel? Do you see any fluid leaking?

It could be just about anything - master, slave, throwout bearing, pilot bearing. Probably time to pull the trans out and open up the bell and do a clutch job.

Petal feels perfect. But I did see fluid on the bell housing do I changed the fluid in the Trans and found a bearing cylinder shaped about a half an inch long.any ideas? Does this throw out pilot bearing and thruout bearings?

If the transmission input shaft has a bad bearing, I suppose that could chew up the clutch assembly.

If it's brake fluid on the bell housing, the slave is leaking. If it's oil, that's usually the rear main seal.

I believe it is the input shaft because I have to float it into gear. But my buddy its selling me a Trans really cheep so i'm going to replace it then tear mine down to fix my curiosity. But it still makes no noise I just have to float it into great like a truck driver haha

If you read the whole thread, you would have seen that he just changed the fluid and there was debris in it.

Is there any difference between 97 5 speeds and 03 5 speeds?

Yes, the shift tower is in a different location, and the V-6 and V-8 transmissions are not interchangeable.
