4R70W rebuild cost?

Well my 01 Screw (4.6 4x4) is a scad shy of 107k on the clock and it's starting to show her age, the trans is starting to slip. I got on the interstate the other day and romped it at about 60mph, the tac spun up to 4500 rpm's and nothin' happened, speed stayed the same. It did it again this morning. As long as I don't ride it like an old lady at a biker convention it's alright, but I know it's on its way out. So my question is, how much is this going to cost me? I don't have the time, inclination, or space to rebuild it myself, nor do I feel like having to mess with the transfer case. TIA

Most places wont even touch it for less then $1500. and that's to put it back like stock.
Now if you want to up grade to better parts, more clutches, you can spent a lot.
My 4R70W is built to handle 1000 HP and I have over $5000. in it.

$5000 is a bit much. For a well built trans with a good converter I would expect to have about $3000-$3500 to have it done right. $1800-$2200 for stock rebuild, done right.

The Ford dealership sells factory rebuilds with a 3yr - 36,000 warranty for around $ 1,800 exchange.

5K? Ouch. I don't plan on a 1,000hp truck, it's just a stocker minus the e-fans.

Does Ford offer the extra discs? Do the replacement transmissions have all of the accunulated upgrades in them?

I looked into the factory tech monsterbox (or whoever makes it, might not have been FT) and it was like $3000 with shipping, but you had to do or provide the labor. But it was built like a brick chithouse. Of course, a local guy read the spec sheet and said he could do all that for about $2000 installed. (mines an E4OD)

If you ain't spending at least $2K, then its probably a soft rebuild and won't last 50K miles. I had one rebuilt, in a 92 Explorer (A4LD) and it lasted about 25K miles before it was slipping again. I swore off rebuilds after that. I'd rather take a lower mileage unit from a wrecked one for $500 and take my chances

And oh yeah, once it slips like that once, one day it'll downshift and never hit another gear. Thats exactly the same as it happened to me, in the middle of nowhere swampland SC on hwy 17. (for those of them that know it, 17 has some desolate areas)

17 before you hit myrtle beach or before you get around the savannah hwy part? i travel on savannah hwy goin south at least once a week. once the buildings dissapear, theyre gone for quite a while.

i was wondering about rebuilds and all that myself. only have 69K or so but i want something that feels a little better under the truck without going the tuner market. xtreme 4x4 (on spike) makes rebuilding a tranny seem easy. how bad are these things really? 02 xlt fx4, not sure wut tranny i have.

17 once you leave west ashley, headed towards I95. Abot 15 miles out where its just marsh on both sides. Now thats a chitty feeling.

Rebuilding an auto trans is like brain surgery for those who've never done it. I tried it once, about 2 years ago. They tranny still resides in 45 or more pieces in my garage

i got a price on a reman here and it was gonna be 1600 with a 3 year 75,000 mile warranty.versus a $1000 junkyard tranny with 20k on it.the steering pump i got from them had all 3 mounting bolts broken at the case.so i really wouldn't be very comfortable buyin a tranny from em.i know its a business and they don't get paid anymore to gently remove a tranny.so i'm goin with the reman.

If you wanta used one, I have a friend who owns a yard in south GA who'll sell you one for about $500 + frieght. I know him personally, and have all my life and he's never sold me a bum part, and if he did he'd eat the shipping to send you a good one. Let me know.....

You can check their operation out at

Thanks for the info. A Brother of mine told me to check out a local place called Poor Tony's, they've always done good by him. I called the dealer yesterday to look for a round about figure and neither of the service teams answered their phones. I'll give em a holler Monday to see what their deal is. I obviously don't want to spend $$$$$ but right now I'm looking for the best long term deal. If I can get a new/reman trans from Ford with a warranty that's built to the specs (or better) of what I have now for not too much $ I'll go with that one over having my own rebuilt. We shall see.

How about Jaspar trannies?

Aside from a Ford rebuilt, have you checked out/priced a Jaspar reman tranny?

Justa thought - looking seriously at putting one into my broken '98 if the tranny is trashed - and I'll know by the end of the week.

Beats a truck payment or buying someone else's problem....

I would choose reman over Jasper. Better warranty and quality IMO.

if you have four stands and a jack, you can get it out and in yourself, t-casse is not that heavy, or you can buy a trans and pay someone else to install
