Screwed up something in the front end ?

I'm not sure what I did. Installed Urethane bushings on the front shocks/Installed new bushings in sway arm/ New sway arm link bolts/sleeve and bushings/Used a grease injecting needle and filled ball joint dust boots with grease/ Cleaned up the back of the rims and rotor faces/ Applied a thin coat of grease to the back of rims before install.

The front end shakes from 45 -55 mph. Steering wheel jerks from side to side real fast.

Went back to the shop/ Installed factory bushings (Top shock bushings) on the shocks/ went for a drive/ problem gone.

I had the front wheels off a couple days ago for something else not reflated/ re-installed wheels and it's shaking again ? WTF ? I didn't touch any thing but the wheels ??

There's not a whole lot of grease on the rims - Their factory rims.

I'm puzzled now. - Rims seem fine/ Pressures good. - Are you not suppose to inject grease into the ball joint dust boots/all boots in front end where greased this way, that don't include a Zerk fittings ? That's the only thing I can figure I may have done wrong? Trucks never acted this way before/ front end is tight.

I'm going to try blowing some of the grease out of them and then re-seal. What do you guys think ?

I'm having a similar problem. Does it do it all the time at that speed? Or, does it do it when hitting small bumps in the rode? Mine drives fine, and then I'll hit some small bumbs and it will start shaking like I have a 5lb weight on one side of my tire...If anyone knows, please help. I have a 2001 f150 4wd w/ 4" pro-comp suspension lift with 35" Maxxis mud tires. Thanks

No bumps, smooth road only between 45 -55 mph.

I had a problem a few years ago after installing Bilstens. I would it a little bump and get like a bobble from the front end. Personally , I think the shocks are to short. Went round and round with Bilstein about it and they say I have the right shocks.

I had to loosen the top bolt far from torque spec before I could get it to quit. Comfortable shocks, but I don't trust that their right for the truck.

Really? They can react this way when out of balance ? I thought maybe you would get vibrations or excessive up and down movement, but not this.

You may be right, I'll take it in if it's still there after I get it back together this time.

I did find a little wheel weight on the ground in the shop, but there's know way to tell if it's mine. I looked for evidence on the rims and don't see any.

I'll rotate the tires and see what happens.

Thanks!

Yeah, it does sound more like a balancing issue for yours. The shops always ask me if it happens at certain speeds and if so, it's a balancing issue. Sometimes tires can just be f-ed up I guess.. good luck. I'm convinced that mine could be that pro-comp shock causing my problem, so I'll check for warranty.

yea....and by no way am i an expert but i would definetly try getting them rebalanced before i start replacing parts...shouldnt cost much to get them balanced...but you could have just gotten a bad tire (or tires) i have heard that some tires just are made bad...so if that dont fix it then try maybe borrowing someone elses tires to see what happens...if it still happens i would say something like tie rod ends...just my suggestions is stick with the cheap fixes first and see what ya can figure out good luck and let us know what ya find out.

also, try jacking the truck up and see if you can shake the tire in any way...if so you may have bad ball joints...un-likely i think but a free check...just need a jack.

if i think of something else, i will let ya know.

Cool! , Thanks for the replies. Tires are still like new. Tire rods/Ball joints Still tight. Ford replaced everything on the front end not to long ago. Trucks drive train is great. I just started driving this truck again, it sat for awhile. Tires -New Fortera's (Silent Armors) were installed on a new set of factory Aluminums last year. Yea, they balanced the tires. I think that weight I found on the shop floor came from this truck. I checked my daughters truck, it didn't come from there. I looked at my rims again, can't find any marks/evidence of throwing a weight. Going in for a re-balance later today - should still be free.

Had the tires rebalanced and an alignment yea, they were out. The guys at Discount Tire (great guys) looked up the part number on the Bilsteins. Part numbers right, but they said those shocks looked like they belong on a 2WD lol. I'm getting new ones. They only charged me $38

But what a sh^ty deal I got from Bilstein.

Yea, I better. Have allot invested in the truck - Time/Money - Everything's been gone thru/replaced. Truck has 258,000 on it. Shocks effect braking and front end components, so I better replace with the right size. I wish I would have kept my stock shocks so I could at-least get a measurement, but I chucked em.

Just looked at Monroes for a quick fix, I can pick up a set just down the road, but I'm not crazy about the looks lol.

Edlebrooks look alright. Still looking.

I did find these tho - http://www.pitstopusa.com/detail.aspx?ID=24190

Hey Brew,
Why would you throw Monroe's on as a quick fix and not a permanent fix.
I had my rear's done by a company who specializes in commercial suspension but will do full-sized trucks (like ours). Here's the kicker, my friend at the local dealership sent me to the company, to have my leafs, torn down, cleaned, rebushed, new plastic-disc's and rebanded. The bonus is they recommend the best shock for my truck and had them in stock. I called Paul at the dealership and he said I couldn't do much better with those shocks in his opinion.
Funny thing is I just called them recently to have my fronts done and they are recommending the Monroe Gas Magnums for the front as well. A bit more money but it definately changed the way my truck rode. I'm looking forward to my Monroe's going in.

Here's a link: http://www.monroe.com/products/gasmagnum.asp
