Talking Trans over heating fix

I think I might have found a fix to our problem. I installed a B&M trans pan that hold 4 quarts more fluid. I also changed out the fluid to synergen sythetic fluid amd installed a trans temp gauge.

The temp before the mods were running about 170 - 180 under normal driving. After the mods at the track after 6 runs it never got above 125. I never lost boost once.

Part numbers are pan - BMM-40290 $165.00 the 9 quarts of synthetic fluid 112.00 and the temp gauge sensor was just tapped into the side of the new pan.

Hope this helps.

This was a good modification. More fluid cooler temp. The trans already has a temp gauge in it that monitors the temp. Just not so you can see it. You used an aftermarket guage and sensor so you could monitor it. Nice piece of work H8 2 W8.

Thanks Rob:
Of course, you have just destroyed my ever so cleverly crafted budget for upgrades again, darnit.
PS: None of our business, but what line of work are you in. I gave up at about $150K in valuing your stable, all more of less current vehicles.

Rob,
Very nice work installing the pan and guages. I loved the look of the cast aluminum pan. This is a must for all of us.Is your schedule open for the 24th for some more Drag-Time?

Actually I'm not too sure that's such a good idea. While lowering your trans temp definately does improve transmission life, you have to be cautious of the mods you make on these trucks. Tranny temperature is a vital part of the PCMs transmission control strategy. If the PCM see too high a temp, it will shut off boost and lock the convertor. If it sees too LOW temperature, it will unlock the convertor, which will really kill your ETs. I personally like the cooler idea better, which by the way, should be ready tro order soon.

I guess the real question is "what is too low?" If 125^F is not too low, then running more fluid to get lower trans fluid temps should be just as effective as running an upgraded trans cooler...except you're moving more fluid now than before.

I understand your point, Sal. If the temps are indeed too low, you can also experience accelerated wear (just like if engine oil temps are too low and you're flogging the motor). But, if the end result of the extra fluid capacity leads to roughly the same fluid temps as the new cooler will, then I think it would be 6 to one and half-dozen to another.

Why did you only use 9qt of sythetic fluid. The trans holds 14+qt of fluid. You are not taking full use of the sythetic. I used a trans fluid exchanger at my work at 12K. You could have used something like it and got most of old fluid out, but would have had to use 18+qt. Did you get a 4x4 filter so it could pick up closer to bottom of pan? I have been thinking of getting a 4x4 pan and filter. But maybe I'll get the B+M pan then 4x4 filter. Thanks for the part number.

The reason I only used 9 quarts was because I could not get all of the fluid out if the converter. I didn't have the pump to pump it out of the converter.

The mod works great and I thought that it would cool everything down just like a larger trans cooler.

Installed the B&M pan, made 4 power burn outs with slicks, no loss of power. Made one pass thru 1/4 no time loss or converter lockout problems. Note: use of 4x4 filter requires cutting off some of the pickup. I went back with the original filter, pickup location is just fine. Not sure of oil temp but appears to be about 30 degrees cooler.
Nice modification for all "L" owners. Good work H8 2 W8

Sal, Anyone....

What effects if any do you think the interceptor modulator will have on this tranny as far as heat and wear are concerned. I did install it and Don't want to ruin it just for slightly improved shift feel.

Thanks Guys.

Where did you guys get this B&M pan at? From what I understand its ok to use the stock trans filter with this deeper pan. Thanks Jeff

Hey Jeff,

I ordered the pan from summit racing (800) 230-3030. The filter on there now is ok, I just switched the gain alittle more protection from contaminating the fluid.

Good Luck.

Thanks bud...I just ordered the pan. I didn't realize that the 4R100 uses the same pan as the E40D. I presume there is a drain plug on the torque convertor. I think I'm going with Royal Purple's version of the mercon fluid. Jeff

First, the 4R100 is an E4OD, they changed the name more than the transmission, there's not much difference. Second, on the Lightnig model of the 4R100, (on all of them with 6 bolt converters) there is a converter drain plug, just pop the grommet out of the bell housing like area (no more bell housings, but you know what I mean), turn the converter until you get to the plug, and Viola'. Be sure to follow the right procedure to re-fill the converter.
