My wife and I went to Europe for 3 week this summer and we rented and Mercedes 320 Kompressor and had a hell of a good time. Having the L there would have been fun on the Auto bond, but you need to remember that the roads sume times are narrow, and the gas is about 4 times what it is in the US. If you get in an accident over there they automatically pin it on the foreigner. You may just want to rent!

Would make for interesting driving.,
Be prepared to pay the equilivent of $200 to fill the truck with gas.
Expect roads to be a lot narrower than you're used to and a lot busier.
Roads in the UK are bad at best but on the continent are pretty good overall. The German Autobhans will lead to much fun but if you happen to take a trip thru the Uk be prepared for lots of trafic and speed cameras on almost every road, mind you with US plates they aint gonna ticket you

Anyone who knows their cars will look in awe and will love the V8 noise, the ones we get tend to be Jags/Mercs and you wouldnt know its a V8.
As for gas prices. Currently in the UK its 90p per litre which is about $1.60. Just under £5 a gallon which is $8-$9

In Germany take another $20-$30 off the price of a tank of gas, the UK is the most expensive in Europe

For it to be legal in the UK and i think its the same for Europe it has to have a test called the SVA test where they change the lights etc for Euro spec and test all the other stuff so that it means the Euro regs. Usually on imports it gets done by the dealer. It can be done by the public if they take it to the right place so thats not a problem. also the registration of the vehicle is up to the buyer as well. Only problem you might find is selling it quickly, because of the fuel prices in Europe it might not sell very quickly.
Dont worry about the plates or exhaust, that tends to be down to personal taste.
Theres plenty of L's for sale here in the UK which have been freshly imported and not yet registered.
