Install Ford OEM 6 disc changer in 2005 F150 XL

I have a 2005 Ford F150 XL standard cab, what they call the basic work truck. It has an AM/FM radio with single CD player. I want to change that out to a unit out of a 2005 Supercrew, which has the AM/FM radio plus the 6 CD disc changer. Someone at the local Ford place said I can't do it because the 6 disc changer was not an available option on the XL in 2005.
Does that make sense? Is he right, or can I go ahead and make the switch?

Yes you can. As long as the new unit is not an audiophile deck, it will be a direct swap.

Audiophile decks have three plug sockets on the back like this

The plug closest to the antenna connector is for the sub, regular decks don't have the that third plug. An audiophile deck can be used, but it will sound like crap. The AuPh decks have an internal crossover that send the lower freqs to the sub so you would have no bass unless you hooked up a sub to it.

I believe that it is an Audiophile deck, so that is not good news. Is there anywhere to put a subwoofer in the standard cab XL? What is the middle plug used for?
Maybe I should just sell this unit and buy a non-audiophile unit.
Thank you for the information. I appreciate it.

In 07 you could get a reg cab FX4 with the audiophile system. If you can find a pic of one you can see how it's mounted.

The middle plug is for aux and overhead dvd systems. If you have an ipod adapter harness it would plug in there.

Here is what an audiophile sub looks like

Thanks again. The subwoofer you show is under the back seat, and of course I don't have a back seat. There is hardly any room back there in the standard cab, but probably enough to get a subwoofer in there. Do you have any suggestions on a subwoofer?

There is a custom sub box for a 2004 reg cab with a 12 in it for sale in the classifieds. The seller is in PA if that's anywhere near you.

Well, I finally installed the 6 CD radio/changer in my '05 XL. The radio works fine, but the CD changer does not. When it first comes on after being plugged in, it says INITIALIZING and makes some mechanical noises like it's changing slots, or maybe trying to eject a CD. Then it becomes quiet, and the screen says "CD ERROR". That's it. Won't do anything else.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Subscribing. I have the same problem. I went from '07 non-audiophile 6 disc to '07 audiophile 6 disc and I get the same "initializing" message followed by 30 secs of humming (like its searching for cds) then "cd error" message. The difference between the old and new cd player is my old one would go "kachunk" while searching for cds. Is this a reprogramming issue or faulty cd player issue? Sorry if this is a semi hijack.

I gave up. Sent the head unit back to the seller and got my money back. I guess I will have to try a non-audiophile unit in this truck. Still don't know if it was the unit or the truck, but assumed it was the head unit.
