How did you determine that it was down a liter? Most cars and trucks anymore aren't at the top mark when full. Some (mine included) have been about half way between the top and bottom mark when filled with the proper quantity of oil. The only way to know where the true "full" mark is, is to do your own oil change (I do) and fill it with the exact amount called for in the manual after a filter and oil change. Once run and let to drain down, that mark on the dip stick, on LEVEL ground, will be your full mark. Scribe your stick for the full mark. DON'T fill to top mark, if the prescribed amount doesn't bring it to there. Most manufacturers quit putting "full" and "low" on the sticks quite a few years ago and MOST don't come to the top mark when full.

I expect one to use a small amount of oil, I want it to do so. A quart in 5000 miles is very low usage. By using a small amount, it is less likely to be so tight that it wears out sooner.

Ford says for approx the first 10k miles, the 5.0 will consume a little bit of oil. anything more 1qt/1k miles is considered excessive.
after 10k miles a consumption rate of 1qt/1500 miles is considered normal.

It has been my experience with 5.4 engines that they use a qt of oil in about 2500 miles until one I owned had about 80,000 miles on it. The other one used a qt in about 2500 miles until about 70,000 miles. After that many miles the oil consumption was a qt in about 5,000 - 6.000 miles. It takes a long time for the rings to fully seat.
I've had a similar experience with a 94 5.0 truck engine and a 200 cu. inch 81 Granada engine.
Also, full on my truck is at the 1/2 qt low level on the dip stick. If I add that extra 1/2 qt, it will disappear until it gets to the 1/2 qt low level.

That is good advice. Do an oil change and fill it with 8 qts. After it sits a while, check the level. That will be your full mark, and go from there.

Blue- you should know since you're '11 is also a 5.0L. I realize you probably don't change your own oil, I'm just amazed at that quantity since it seems like a lot of cars are dropping quantity, rather than increasing. Oil companies should like that.

Yep, I was surprised, after buying the truck, to discover that the smaller 5.0 took a quart more than my 5.4. May have something to do with it being a high RPM engine. I don't know.

One thing is for sure---with all the different quantities required for various engines, always check the level after an oil change. Twice, with my 5.4, I was shorted a quart and this was at a Ford dealer. The first time it happened, the service writer even argued with me that it only took 6 qts, when I went in and informed him it was a quart low. He the proceeded to look it up to prove to me and I got to point out the difference in a 2v and a 3v. I never drive off without pulling the dip stick. That will also eliminate the possibility of their forgetting to put the new oil in.
