Auto Transmission Life Expectancy

Auto Transmission Life Expectancy
We hear of the Tritons going well over 250k miles without a mechanical glitch( barring the infamous spark plug issues), sometimes even going into some stratospheric mileage numbers.
But what about trannys?
Under best conditions what's typical and atypical in terms of mileage... what's the most mileage driven on these later generation transmissions?
Maybe a pointless thread, but my curiosity is piqued on this, and just having a little fun.

under best circumstances 1.2 million miles....

mine made it to ~240,000 miles 4r70w. maintenance is key.

I'd venture to say on the million mile van, what made it the super tranny would be little shifting as in highway driving. Maybe a 1234 up and 4321 down a few times per road trip.
He put in a Quart a week of 10/40 and it's hard to say if it was burning most it or leaking it out. I'll bet that rear seal leaked a bunch.
Interesting and thanks.

The transmission in my F350 has 170,000 miles on it and until I got the truck it towed everday but the owner was very OCD about maintaining the truck and staying on top of PM's. You can smoke a transmission just by driving it normally if you don't stay on top of PM's and fluid levels.
You have a different tranny then he has. You have the bigger, stronger 4R100.
Hes talking about a 4R70,
although he neglected to mention that in his opening post...lol
My truck has 35000 miles on it and Ive been through 3 4R70s in 3 years. Two were race built...hahahahah
I run a 4R100 now(race built) and it's holding up well.
But this is under extreme circumstances.

I've used Amsoil in engine and Diff. but I shied away from it for the trans....but in hindsight I wish I didnt.
A few trans. issues are burning the overdrive band out, as from the worn servo valve allowing a lubrication/pressure issue for the 4th gear holding power of the band.....4th gear slips/ and shudders.
And another is a worn solenoid regulator valve causing global lube issues when under load.
Go Amsoil.

I have 190k on my original factory 4R70W with factory fluid still in it. I do have the shudder when I downshift from OD to 3rd, but it has been doing that for over 100k miles. I think I read it is the torque converter locking up. I am gonna keep driving it till it falls out the bottom of my truck.

Mine as been giving me trouble for the last 30k, it is at 160k now with tranny fluid replace with synthetic about 15k ago. (didn't help). I MUST let it warm up for at least 5-10 minutes winter or summer before I put it in gear or it slips really, really bad in 1st. Would just sits and spin if not warmed up.

So I would say I'm overdue just have to wait until after x-mas. Money tight.

I normally do NOT recommend any kind of tranny fluid additive, but if you are going to get it rebuilt or replaced anyway, throw a couple bottles of Lucas in it. Your tranny has "morning sickness" and my stepdaughter had the same problem in her Chrysler minivan - the Lucas kept it going for another year.
