tranny rebuild cost?
hello, I live in vancouver, WA. My 05 f150 transmission took a crap on me last week for the second time. The first being @29,000mi and the second @70,000mi. The first was covered under the ford warrenty and the second, well I was not so lucky. Any way it is being totally rebuilt with a new torque converter. The mechanic I talked to said he was going to beef up the tranny with some older "hard parts" saying they were better for the trans than the updated stuff. Well AAMCO wants 3,841.00 total for the rebuild, the mechanics time, to the fluid. Is it just me or am I getting shafted and what is the cost otherwise? Thanks Erik

As a point of comparison, I recently spent $2900 to have a rebuilt AX4N transmission put in my '02 Windstar -- the tranny itself was $1500 and the rest was labor -- it's a pain ' cause they have to tie the engine in place and then lower the tranny on its frame out of the van from the bottom with a special jack. However, they shouldn't have to go to that length on a rear-wheel drive truck so the labor should be less in theory. Not sure about the transmission cost, but if you can find out the transmission model number (look on the side or bottom plate) you can usually google something like "rebuilt <model #> transmission" and find what places are selling rebuilt units for. What AAMCO is charging you for their rebuild efforts and parts should definitely be lower than what a complete rebuilt unit would cost.

The AAmco mechanic said there was not all that much that is offered for the 4r75e tranny as far as the aftermarket stuff. But he did tell me that it should last for at least 60,000mi considering I am running 35" tires and that is a definite tranny killer. I put a factory tech shift kit in it along with a bigger trans cooler hopeing it would help. Well I got 10,000 more mi that the last time!!!

3k for a trans rebuild is CRAZY. I bought a completely built 4r70w(good for 600hp) and fluid for 2k. The 4r75 doesnt have as many part available at the moment to "beef" them up, but the 4r75 is already a stronger, better built trans than the 4r70. I would recommend Darrin as well, but he is hard to get ahold of sometimes.
Here is a link to the same company that built my transmission. Comes with a 3 year, unlimited mileage warranty. Here is a heavy duty built trans for your truck
