Anybody Ever Replace their Rack and Pinion?

Help Please:

Its come down to me needing to replace my rack and pinion on my truck. Its producing a clucking within the rack indicating that it is shot, as well as my tires taking a bit of wear on the edges.

so my question is has anyone tackled this project on their own? what were your experiences?

Thank you to all that throw in their tid bits. i dearly appreciate help in this 2 year issue ive had

you may just need to inner tie rod sockets replaced and not the whole rack! jack up wheel on one side at a time and see if there is movement in the inner boot of the rack, if so replace the inner socket.

well i was thinking that too but i feel that since i just replaced those (around a year ago) they wouldnt be at fault ALREADY!...

but the noise sounds like its definately inside the rack ... almost at the point the steering shaft goes into the rack.

But im thinking that sparing any special tools... i should be able to tackle this project ... after lots of digging....

im also worried since i saw someone say they had terrible outcome of using A1-Cardone brand racks which never really saw any improvment... its cheaper than the motorcraft alternative... but by a huge 200 dollar difference

make sure the noise is not coming from the little u-jounts on the steering shaft, they wear out too.

Replaced the rack and pinion.... Drives smoother ... Same clunk/noise .... Has to be steering shaft but nobody has answers.... Tired of replacing parts after plenty of research and no results

I feel like you might have a worn suspension component that is only "popping" when the steering/suspension is in a certain position. Have you checked all of the sway bar links, upper/lower arms, coil/shocks for tightness or worn components?

I honestly have looked so deep into this I know it's nothing BUT the rack or the Shaft

I replaced the shaft already to only a little LESSER of what I was experiencing but it is well and alive still...

Turning into driveways .... Articulation causes the shift and the knock ...

Parked rocking wheel back and forth... It's there

Grabbing the shaft in the engine bay ... It's there

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SApiCOwT9p0

^^^^ this is the noise ... Which sounds like this while driving too and drives me nuts

How can I be the only one!?

Have been in talks with a rep for A1 Cardone ... Recommended I get some information on a TSB regarding a low pressure power steering line that may cause the knock. Cannot be the issue IMO because the truck does this while OFF even

I know the problem is within the rack.

I've sent him a link to my YouTube video of the problem. Will remain updating until a solution is found.
