Need Help!!! :(

Ok, so I got seven plugs out of my 04 5.4L. While doing plug number 8, the lisle tool broke into the heat shield. Is there any way I can pop that heat shield out without removing the head?

Is that the 100.00 dollar tool from NAPA that broke?
I hear there is a tool much like an easy out to remove broken plugs...

I was just going to start a Thread on this.

I haven't started pulling the plugs yet.
Had misfire on cyl number 5 changed the coil still misfire.

Started working at the plug so far it moved about 1/16th of an inch...
Have 66k on the truck...

Can I ask for a break down of the tools you used to remove your 7 plugs?
My problem is my truck is in one place and ALL my tools are in another...
Rather then bringing my entire box or most of it. I'd like to know what tools I will need.
Extentions, sockets, etc... Please...

As far as your problem... I've heard of guys lifting the front cab off the frame to get to the ones tucked in by the firewall. Or pulling the motor...

I too am keeping my fingers crossed that none break so I don't have this issue.

EDIT: Can I ask how much time do you have into the change thus far?

And what plugs are you using?

I was told that while they don't last as long that Champion plugs are better to replace the old ones because they are made out of differant material then the plats in the truck...

Here is the extractor Lisle 65600...There is another part to it, called the pusher. I have probably about 4 hours total into this project as I work on it when I can. I put the motocraft plugs back in the 7 I have out, but with antisieze on the heat shield. With regard to tools and sockets used, I would have to go check as I am slightly mechanically inclined. I had 82k miles on these plugs and ran one bottle of seafoam, 5 tanks of chevron with techron, and had the complete fuel system cleaned, both top and bottom.

Oh %$&* I REALLY hope mine down come out like that....

Any look with the last one?

Think outside of the box... Sometimes it helps when I get in a bind.

Use tools that may not be for that etc...

Had I done more so far on mine I'd maybe be of more help to you...

But thanks for the help you've given me.

No problem Mr Extreme, just remember to crank them 1/8 of a turn and spray some motorcraft carb cleaner down there and let them sit. Make sure you do this when the engine is warm as I have found they are much easier to extract if broken. Also, order you the Lisle 65600, I found mine on ebay for 69.99 with free shipping. With regard to mine, I think I am going to try and get a drill down in there and use an easy out to pull it. I have also heard that sometimes cranking it might blow the heat shield loose. I want to know if a tech on here would recommend cranking it to blow it out of the hole.

No wonder you had so much breakage. Do not use aerokroil! There's a reason for this, as it does not break down the deposits on the electrode sleeve that makes the plugs stick in the head upon removal. That's why Ford changed to Motorcraft Carb Cleaner for the soak.

You should have followed the latest TSB from Ford on changing spark plugs. Click the link.

Stealth, I did use motorcraft, as I was typing my response I had 3 other threads open along with this one and typed aerokroil in the wrong response. Some of the plugs were broke before I even began this mission as I had 3 different misfires.

It is all good...I did a car fax, and my truck was on lease from dearborn MI...Probably a ford worker or something had it. Do you have any suggestions for extracting that last heat shield and the broken piece of the lisle puller in it? <------It may be another fun night

hopefully it goes better then after my plug change ... plugs went great then bank 2 cat blew out haha ... i guess going for a crappy cat under crappy compression didnt hold up to good compression afterwards .. blew the cat sideways and was barely drivable... limped home a mile away from my shop i work at and then sat in the driveway till i got it up to ford because it was covered under 8yr/80k
