New rear brakes at 36K?? Why?

Took the truck to the dealer for an oil change the other day. Came back with less than 3mm brake left in the rear pads. I haven't even done the fronts yet.
Anyone had rear pads wear faster than the fronts?
How long do you think I can make 3mm last?
Truck sits most of the time. Don't pull or haul much.

Seems odd to have the rears so far down when the fronts are still good.

It's not unheard of to have the rears go out before the fronts on a truck. The brake proportioning valve is biased to the back on a truck, whereas a car is set up for the fronts to do most of the braking.

You're lucky. I had to have them done at 27,000 miles.

I waited until 60k for the rear on my silver truck with a few trailer pulls, and my red truck has almost 80k on factory rear pads and has never pulled a trailer

Im not sure what original specs are, but i would guess 10 or 11mm when new, so you are at about 25% life remaining. So figure if you made 33k, then youve got atleast another 5k before you need to check them again

Did my fronts at 37k and my rears at 52k kinda weird to do rears before fronts when the front does 3/4 of your braking

My wifes freestar needed rears at 35k and the fronts are original at over 80k. Told backs get more work in trucks/vans.

yep

previous generations was about a 70/30 split for braking power front/rear

the 2004+ is about a 60/40 split. The rears do alot more work than prior trucks did. It is very common to only get about 30,000 miles from a set of brakes.
it is a 6,000 lb truck after all

Also if you do the pads your self you'll see that the rear pads are pretty small for this size of vehicle too. There's just not much surface area on the pads so there wear pretty quick. I was almost to the metal in 38k miles or so and I'm easy on the brakes too.

The brakes on these trucks are too small, it's simply poor engineering. Our Grand Caravan has poor brakes that need frequent replacement as well. Never had such problems with our Honda or Toyota.

No excuse for such poor brakes in this day and age IMO. Not only is it a hassle to replace the things, but my wheels are always full of brake dust. I'll be replacing with ceramics not so much for performance but to keep the dust down.

I have noticed the rear wheels have more brake dust on them than the fronts and thought that was odd. Now I know why I guess.

Yeah I know what your saying, it confuses me too because there is a ton of brake dust on my front wheels, and the rears stay pretty clean. Do they have different pads?

At 11,000 miles, I could not stand the brake dust any longer and replaced the front and rear with Wagner ThermoQuiets. I have 78,000 on these pads and still have pad left. They stop my truck very well, I don't see the brakes being inadequate at all.

Well, I'm pretty sure my rotors are warped at 15k miles on a 2008!! The bed shakes like crazy when I apply brakes, especially at higher speeds. I never ride the brakes ad I've never even had to slam on them. Ford wont even look at it without charging me. Sucks.
