Question What size to upgrade from 265/70/17

The ol' lady just had a blowout, so I sized her some new Firehawks for her Sunfire. Her stock size was 195/70/14, but she wanted wider and a little more low profile. I didn't want the speedo to be way off so I sized her some 205/60/14's. They look tough as hell and really helped out with handling, etc. Best of all, her speedo is only off about 3 mph at 70 mph.

I am about due for some new rubber on my 2001 4x4 with 2" torsion bar lift. I of course want as wide and tall as possible, but I don't want it to feel unstable as my Ranger did with 33 x 10.50!!! That thing was crazy. Scary to drive over 50 mph.

I also don't want to lose too much as I already have the 3:55 gears and going up to large will KILL my low-end, which is already suffering from my intake / exhaust mods. Luckily though, I have the 5 speed.

What is the best over-all size to go to that will be fatter and taller for my stock wheels? Thanks!!!

BTW, my stock size is 265/70/17.

Also, what is a good tire to go with that's fairly inexpensive / not outrageous, but will last me quite a while. I got about 30,000 out of my stock Goodyears and would like to do over 40,000 next time. I rotate every 6K - 9K. I rarely go off-road, but I still want plenty of meat as winters can get pretty ugly here and I've had to accidently do some off-roading to avoid accidents. Our launch ramp down at the lake is also a little rough to say the least.

Pro Comp makes a 33x12.50-17 all-terrian. It will be about an inch taller and two inches wider than you stock tires. 4Wheel Parts sells them and a lot of times has a buy 3 get 1 free deal. Several members have them mounted on stock wheels with now fitment problems.

Thanks for the tip man, but I'm afraid this is probably a little too large isn't it? Doesn't this KILL low-end?

I see that 305/7x/17 is also pretty popular. I dunno, I'm lost.

Your stock tires are almost 32 inches tall. The 33x12.50s are almost 33 inches tall. I don't think that you are going to notice a 1 inch difference in height effecting performance. I swapped my stock 30 inch (255/70-16) tires for 33s and didn't notice any difference. Also, a 305/70-17 will be almost 34 inches tall, since a 305/70-16 is almost 33 inches tall. But I really don't think that you would notice a difference with a 2 inch taller tire. Also, I think the Pro Comps have a 50,000 mile treadlife warranty on the AT's.

Angry Beware 4wheelparts.com

I too am in the market for new rubber (due to the fact my GY RT/S's scare me on wet pavement) - So about 2+ weeks ago I ordered 4 33X12.5X17 ProComp AT's from 4wheelparts.com. They were having the famous buy 3 get one free deal. I placed my order online - total came to $599.85. Following day I received both a call and e-mail from 4wheelparts asking about the lift status of my truck. I called them up and they said the tires would rub without a lift kit - So we agreed to cancel the order. As of today, 2 weeks later and many calls and unanswered e-mails - I have yet to see my credit card adjusted for the $599.85 charge and I still need new rubber. Most expensive tires I never got.

BEWARE

Damn, sorry to hear that man. Hope they come through for you, but if not, you can always dispute the charges with your credit card company pretty easily I believe.

I have spent the better part of the day looking into my options. Looks like I can go 285/70R17 or 33x12.50R17. I still only have about 5 tire choices total, and most of them are mud tires. I prefer All-Terrain, but no biggie. A set of the Goodyear 285/70R17's locally though are $282!!! Jesus that's crazy. If you guys know of a decent place to pickup tires, please, let me know.

I have seen the light and am no longer weary of going to a 33x12.50R17. The 285's are just a second option should they be a lot cheaper, etc. I'm leaning toward the Pro Comp AT's, but I dunno how I'll afford them. Good thing I've started saving and I still have probably 5,000 mi. left on these.

Been there...

I just went through the same thing, minus the credit card problem.

After reveiwing all the posts on this topic I decided to go with the Pro-Comp 33/12.5/17 AT's. Went to buy them from 4-Wheel Parts, and when he asked the application, I told him stock 4x4 Supercrew. He then said sorry we wont sell or install these because they don't fit. After much debate he admited that it was a liabilty issue, not an actual fit issue. He personally did not tink it would work, but finally agreed to sell and install them if I signed a waiver. Well I was sorta spooked so I left without them.

So I decided to go with the Wrangler MTr 285/70/17's. I got them from Tires Direct for $177 ea. Fit is great the ride is good and I am happy, but the 33's sure would have been nice! Take a look at my gallery to see for yourself. Good luck and remeber the people on this board have proven that a tire larger than 265 will work just fine.

285/70-17 works out to be a 33x11.50-17. They are still a 33 inch tire, just an inch narrower than the 33x12.50-17.

Mattbys -

I'm also considering jumping to the 285/70/17s when I need tires. Hopefully, that won't be for a while. I want something slightly bigger than stock (265/70/17) without lifting. I've considered a lift but I'm after a certain "look", not necessarily height and I think bigger tires will accomplish that.

How bout posting a link to your gallery so I can take a look. Couldn't seem to find it.

By the way, I know you have 17" wheels but what's the width? Will a 285/70/17 work on a 17x7.5 wheel? That's my stock rim.

Thanks -
