TIRE DECISION (TOYO or YOKOHOMA)
TIRE DECISION (TOYO or YOKOHOMA)
I'm finally looking at moving out of my stock P235/70/16 on my 97' XLT 4x4 (yep, stock 235's) 5.4L. I'm looking at going up to LT265/75/16's in either the Toyo Open Country or Yokohoma Geolanders. Anyone have any experience with either of these tires? I've tried GY on my older trucks and even tried BFG, hated GY's, liked BFG but found the older Dunlop Radial Rover a better tire back, at least back then (Dunlop is now marketed by GY, here's what I found on TireReview Mag's website: DUNLOP
Marketed By: Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., 1144 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44316. 330-796-1885, FAX 330-796-6525. www.goodyear.com.)
My local tire dealer, TownFair which is southern New England's largest retailer, highly recommends the Toyo, doesn't feel that BFG (even the KO's) are half the tire and are too overpriced even wholesale (though he does carry it and I told him I wanted his best performing tire and don't care about the cost--realizing he will price match TireRack +5%). The next tire he carries and recommends is the GEOLANDER A/TPLUSII.
Anyways any inputs on either the YOKO or TOYO would be appreciated. Oh yeah here is a web address for TireRacks wholesale flyer which I found online. It is
http://www.tirerackwholesale.com/tires/pdf/update.pdf
It is interesting to see what the dealers are charging you versus WholeSale (or at least TireRacks wholesale price to dealers). Looks like BFG and Michelins are the highest wholesale priced tire (no wonder dealers charge an arm and leg for these two tires).
Happy Trails!

I had the Toyo Open Country AT's on my 97 F150 and my 01 Expedition. I live in the northwest and these tires were the best I've ever seen in snow and rain. The ride was incredibly smooth and quiet. These were the best tires I've ever owned. I did not use them much off road, but when I did they worked great. I would highly highly recommend the Open Countrys.
I have the LT Goodyear ATS on my new truck. The ride is much firmer, bumpier, and noisier than the Open Countrys. Hopefully they will handle the bad weather as Good as the Toyos.
