I have a 99 SD 4x2 that when I put on the brakes it pulsates. I assume it has a warped rotor.

How can I tell which one is warped?

Is it something that can be "turned down" and corrected out of it?

Is this something I can remove and replace myself?

Can I or should I buy a used rotor?


Any info would be appreciated

 

Take off the wheels, spin them, and see if the brakes drag in spots. Beyond that, check for runout with a dial indicator.

Some can be turned down. You have to measure them and put them on a brake lathe.

If you know brake service or can follow the service manual and learn, yes.

No, don't buy used rotors; they don't cost that much. I prefer to replace them in front or rear sets.

 

Don't fix just one side. Turn/'replace both rotors & pads as a left/right set. Otherwise your steering will pull to the side of the good new brake.

Truely warped rotors won't leave your pads in A-1 condition. If you replace your rotors, it's not a substantial investment to replace the pads. Take care of it all at once. Lube your bearings, clean everything, check caliper operation, and you'll have a better chance of getting superior results. I've never replaced rotors without replacing pads. I have done the opposite.
