How Critical is Tire Diameter w/4WD?
Have an '11 F250 Fx4 and would like to replace one tire to match the other three. How critical/what is the tolerance for difference in diameter(s). If I find an excellent used match, how close in tread depth does it need to be to the others? I'm trying to avoid transfer case damage and am not familiar with the tolerances.
Is it only an issue when 4WD is engaged? 4WD on this truck is only used periodically as maintenance to keep it limber.
Thank you in advance.

If you have a limited slip rear, different sizes on the rear can be a bit rough on the clutches. If it's an open rear or an e-locker, no problem. In 4wd, it can possibly be a problem if you use 4wd on surfaces with good traction.
Will not affect it at all, mainly because tire tolerance can deviate with just the amount of air, plus normal (and even abnormal) wear and tear on a tire.
Now if you put largely sized tires on the front and rear, then you are asking for trouble.
Lastly, tires with the "same" size are often off by a significant amount. Especially if you are crossing manufacturers.
I've dealt with this in the heavy equipment industry.

It is an e-locking rear axle. Just to be clear, the replacement tire would be the same size, make and model. Only the tread depth may be different, potentially 8/32" if new vs. good used.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
